[ he's not entirely certain if the day's gone by fast or slow; feels quick in certain moments, slow in others. when distracted by the preparations, there are not enough hours left in the day. when left alone to his thoughts, the seconds felt to be like weeks. ridiculous; he knows it's ridiculous, a mere trick of the mind. but it's not often he feels anxiety to this level. confidence is his default, the baseline, & a deviance from this is leaving him -- agitated. irate. quick to snap. it's to his luck that alicia & riku are the main sources of company during the day. the two understood, surely.

& it is the former that is standing faithfully by annabelle's door when the designated time arrives. his steps are rigid, calculated, thoughts so entirely elsewhere that when he makes the mindless (routine) motion of entering annabelle's room, he runs into the arm of alicia instead. makes him bounce back a few steps, a frown twisting his lips & the skin between his eyebrows creasing. what the hell, woman?

a short banter later, alicia is fixing robert's appearance -- the unkempt nature of the prince would most definitely raise the worry of the princess, would it not? do try to keep yourself presentable. then a softer smile, a roundabout manner of encouragement later:

a knock at the door. ]

Flat | Top-Level Comments Only

[ shakes his head once, lifting his free hand to cup the side of robert's face. cranes upward to plant a small kiss to his forehead, a means of affection. stays there for only a short while, pulling both himself and his hand away slightly with a smile on his face. ]

There. All is well again.

. . .

[ draws in a quiet breath, then pulls annabelle close to him. hugs him gently as he can manage, simply holding him there in silence as he tries to ready himself yet again for the conversation to come. ]

[ slowly wraps his arms around robert after the initial typical confusion, pressing his face into the curve between his neck and shoulder. doesn't speak for the moment, too busy basking in his warmth. ]

[ allows the moment, enjoying it himself. but eventually lowers his head on a shoulder. speaks softly, without preamble. ]

I must leave tonight.

[ freezes at those words. his hold slowly tightens, allowing his shoulders to slump in (somewhat) acceptance once the weight of said words sinks in for good. ]

... for how long this time?

[ breathes out quietly. ]

I'm uncertain.

[ is silent for a while, and then: ]

Does mother know?

[ a short pause & then stiffly nods. ]

She knows I will be unavailable for a time.

[ closes his eyes slowly, burying his face into his brother's neck. whispers, a little unevenly. ]

I will miss you.

[ draws him even closer, more firmly, not wanting to let go. doesn't speak immediately, needing a moment to stabilize his own voice. then: ]

And I, you, Annabelle.

[ inhales shakily, unable to shake the feeling of dread that slowly begins to build up inside. ]

I will think about you every day. [ every minute. every second-- words unspoken. ]

[ opens his mouth to respond, but the first words choke against his throat. swallows, tries again. ]

And those thoughts will keep me safe.

[ doesn't speak for the moment, too busy allowing his mind to catch up to their current predicament. reluctantly removes himself from robert, reaching behind his neck to unfasten the necklace (http://i51.tinypic.com/33yq7hw.jpg) that is always hidden from view. takes one of his brother's hands, placing it there. ]

Take this. [ squeezes the hand shut gently. ] May you look into it and see me through you.

This. . .

. . . [ frees his hand so that he can peer at the necklace, opening to peer inside it briefly. then closes his fist around it gently again, holding it to chest for a moment before slipping it on. tucks it under his tunic & leans in to press his lips against annabelle's forehead as his sibling had done just moments before. ]

I will keep it safe against my chest, so that I may keep you close to my heart.

[ allows his eyes to slip closed again at the touch, merely basking in it as his hands reach for robert's own. holds them lightly, then tightens them as he composes himself enough to smile up at him and say: ]

Thank you.

[ grips back, needing (wanting) the connection. lets a rare smile pass by his expression. ]

I believe that line to be mine.

You may show me your thanks in other ways. [ lifts a hand after a moment, pushing back some of robert's hair. ] Perhaps with your safe return, hm?

[ & back to baseline, the smile taking on a confident edge even as he lifts his own hand to press annabelle's between his cheek & his palm. ]

Nonsense. It'd be heresy to use what God has already set in stone as a token of my gratitude.

[ tilts his head to the side in mock curiosity. ]

Oh? And what would that be, my prince?

My safe return, of course.

[ can't help but laugh at that, removing his hand to instead shake his head gently. ]

Of course. Forgive me for not assuming.

[ snorts for show. ]

Just this once, Annabelle. You should know better than to doubt your prince.

[ smile takes on a softer edge, leaning in to press the side of his face against robert's in an affectionate manner. ]

I have never doubted you. [ a pause to shift his words into more of a whisper. ] And I never will.
