[ it had been five days full of nothing but silently following robert along, knowing their path yet allowing the younger boy to take the lead due to his mood. who could blame him, though? he was already well aware of robert and annabelle having a close-knit relationship, one that nobody (not even himself) could wiggle their way into. despite being quite inept to the full extent of the bond the two siblings had, he was perceptive enough to realize that their parting had been quite different than their usual. this is why he ceased the typical banter he always initiated, whether it be with good intent or not.

when robert had finally spoken and begun to say more than a discussion of their plans, he knew that his neighboring prince had begun to settle back into place. dare he say it was a comfort of sorts, despite being the one that needed to be extra strong and encouraging. and with that hurtle behind them, the elder of the two moved to his rightful position once more: on robert's left side, striding next to him as if they're simply taking a walk and nothing more. he subtly kept his pace slower than usual as to not pass the boy, using the map robert had previously pilfered from the archives as a silent excuse to keep their position leveled and even, as they had finally reached territory that both of them weren't completely familiar with.

keeps to their comfortable silent for a while longer. stops in his tracks when a thought hits him and pauses. face is rather straight as he says: ]

I'm hungry.

[ sighs a little. cuts it in half, handing a piece over. ]

[ is taken off guard by the action, jerking back a little. & so he's slow in accepting the offering. does not meet riku's eyes, looking at a point far beyond the other prince's head. ]

[ pretends to not notice either way, popping his (smaller) portion into his mouth with ease. a nom or two later: ]

I am very appreciative that my calling did not include the need to feed myself.

[ munches on the meat & slides his pack over to riku in silent offering of the only other foods they have on hand. ]

I share that appreciation.

[ looks down at the pack, though ends up just smiling a little and shaking his head. gestures at the remaining blackened meat instead. ]

May we never have to suffer through this travesty ever again.

[ glances at the rest of their failed meal & snorts. ]

We are men, are we not? We'd be wiser next time. [ undertone: we'd better be. reaches into the bag to tug out a piece of jerky to munch on that once he's finished with his portion. ]

Or, better yet, we'd best make haste into lands where we can enter towns without suspicion.

[ hums a little at that, taking out their map again to begin reviewing it. ]

I do not think it to be wise at this point. [ settles down into his spot nicely when his mind starts to calculate things, quill and ink in hand after some brief rummaging to update their journey thus far. ] We are still in relatively close proximity to your kingdom. It will take weeks to reach safe grounds.

[ breathes out, quelling as much annoyance as he can as he leans back as he remains seated in his own spot. ]

Weeks. [ closes eyes briefly. ] May I be reminded as to why we denied ourselves horses?

We would attract too much attention to ourselves. [ scribbles something on the map. after a while he looks up at robert, cracking a small grin. ] Perhaps your complaints are merely due to feeling weak? Must I carry you the rest of the way?

[ tilts his head a little when he sees that scribbling. leans forward this time to get a better glimpse even as he mutters out his reply. ]

My complaints are due to hunger, you fool. And you may carry me, provided that you are aware that you do so at the risk of losing your hands.

[ pulls the map away from robert's line of sight subtly. ]

Is that so.

[ pauses with a slight frown, then adjusts his head a tad so that he can try to peer at the map again. ]

I dislike repeating myself.

[ moves it not-so subtly this time. ]

Poor Robert, such a difficult life you lead.

[ doesn't answer, an eyebrow twitching in barely concealed irritation. gives both the map & riku a long stare before snapping out a hand to make a grab for it. ]

[ immediately lifts the map in the air, high enough for robert to not grab it so easily. ]

Is there something wrong, Your Grace?

[ scowls & laces riku with a look. ]

That should be my question. Let me see the bloody map!

If you ask nicely.

What could you have possibly written that you do not wish to share it?

Nothing at all. I just think it to be rude to pry without asking permission to.

It is a bloody map.

[ releases a hand to prod at robert's nose with enough force to push him back. ]

Precisely.

[ swipes at the hand irritably when he's pushed, resisting the push the best he can -- without avail, as he's pushed back anyway. ]

You are trying my patience!

[ tilts his head a little. ]

If it is just "a bloody map", then why do you wish to see it?

I should not be required to explain the reasons behind my wishes to you.

Surely you must think otherwise. Am I not your partner throughout this journey?
