[ the weeks seemed to drag by so slowly for him whilst robert were away, having little-to-no interest in the happenings around him throughout the duration of the other boy's leave. more often than not he would be seated by his window, gaze locked on the path that robert would surely return on. it was there that he stayed for most of his days, leaving it only to eat, bathe, or when his mother summoned him. regardless he would put on a smile for those around him, as if nothing was amiss and would say that his brother would surely return soon, that he would be gone for only a short while.

that short while turned into weeks. months. far longer than robert had ever been gone before. on his bad days he wondered if his brother had grown tired of his position (of their situation) and thus would not return for good, but those thoughts were always shadowed by the hope and faith he had in his prince. surely the day of his return would come.

opens his eyes slowly when the sound of music reaches his ears again, lifting his gaze back up towards the crowd of dancing people before him. after some time of simply gazing he sits up straighter in his chair, the one that is forever to his mother's right. does not look at her as she speaks to someone, his curiosity nonexistent. instead he raises his glass and slips at the liquid inside, going back to his silent thinking (of robert, of other things that had been on his mind for quite some while) as a somewhat glazed look overcomes his features once more. ]

[ quirks an eyebrow, his voice taking on a teasing edge as he begins to stroke her hair. ]

And quite fitting, correct?

[ rests her head lightly against one of annabelle's knee, eyes closing as her voice drops a touch. ]

Yes. It is as it should be.

[ smile takes on a softer edge at that, though it does not leave him despite understanding the implications of her words. continues his ministrations, murmuring. ]

Truthfully? Nothing too deep, at the moment. [ hums out a pleased sigh. ] You are quite skilled at this.

[ runs a few fingers through her hair, loosening the strands more. ]

I have many years of practice.

That, I cannot doubt.

Of course. [ pushes some hair behind her ear. ] I only do this with the people I care for the most, after all.

Hidden? No. I have not a reason to hide compliments from those who are worthy.

But you must receive much praise already. [ bends forward a few inches and tilts his head a bit, attempting to get a better look at her face. ] After all, you are the best swordswomen of our kingdom, hm?

[ straightens her spine instinctively at the words. ]

That I am. Perhaps even better than our swordsmen.

[ gasps lightly for show. ]

Oh my, that is very bold of you to say.

[ looks up at him, standard smile in place. ]

[ taps her nose with a finger. ]

Then I believe you must have a sparring match with our neighboring prince someday. It would be a grand scene to witness.

And quite an opponent. Tell me, will my victory bring about war due to stung pride?

That depends on who it is that loses. [ uses that hand to push back some of her bangs. ] He is of great pride, but also willing to shake the hands of those that could best him.

[ peeks open one eye. ]

Ah. Such rightful prince behaviour. Our own should do well in taking after him.

That I will agree to. He really must learn to be a better sport...

Well I was unaware. I am surrounded by gentlemen, after all. [ pauses to resume stroking her hair. ] Then again, I have not had to worry about other men. Just one and one only.
