[ it had been five days full of nothing but silently following robert along, knowing their path yet allowing the younger boy to take the lead due to his mood. who could blame him, though? he was already well aware of robert and annabelle having a close-knit relationship, one that nobody (not even himself) could wiggle their way into. despite being quite inept to the full extent of the bond the two siblings had, he was perceptive enough to realize that their parting had been quite different than their usual. this is why he ceased the typical banter he always initiated, whether it be with good intent or not.

when robert had finally spoken and begun to say more than a discussion of their plans, he knew that his neighboring prince had begun to settle back into place. dare he say it was a comfort of sorts, despite being the one that needed to be extra strong and encouraging. and with that hurtle behind them, the elder of the two moved to his rightful position once more: on robert's left side, striding next to him as if they're simply taking a walk and nothing more. he subtly kept his pace slower than usual as to not pass the boy, using the map robert had previously pilfered from the archives as a silent excuse to keep their position leveled and even, as they had finally reached territory that both of them weren't completely familiar with.

keeps to their comfortable silent for a while longer. stops in his tracks when a thought hits him and pauses. face is rather straight as he says: ]

I'm hungry.

[ watches him closely in silence. leaves the rest of his questions for later, deciding to just incline his head with a small smile. ]

Then I shall continue to be honored to help you reach your goal.

[ inclines his head in wordless thanks, keeping to the silence. then when he feels that a polite amount of moment has gone by, he lets a small smile touch his lips -- the typical one. the confident one. not as wide as usual, but returning nonetheless. ]

I should hope that is the real reason, and not because you wished for convenient break from your own duties.

You must think very highly of yourself if you believe I would go with you to relieve myself from my duties. [ holds his head up a bit higher. ] Spending many hours with you is as if I were taking care of a child. That can be hardly considered a break.

You need not be shy. Unlike yourself, I can be quite modest when accepting compliments.

Is that so? Could have fooled even me.

My apologies. But in the future, I'd like further miscommunication to be cleared as soon as they occur.

[ snorts shortly in amusement. ]

Yes ma'am.

. . . Must you be childish.

I see no childishness. Though I do see someone rather short who resembles that of a child.

[ pointedly looks down at robert, as if making his point crystal clear. ]

[ bristles a bit at the height-jab, brows furrowing. ignores everything else but: ]

My height was not of my choosing.

[ lifts a hand, patting the top of robert's head. ]

I understand. T'was just bad luck when you were formed by the hand of God. [ a pause to shift his head a bit to flip his hair gently. ] Unlike I.

[ swats that hand away, snorting. ]

Yet gifted as you are, you cannot take it upon yourself to have your hair properly trimmed?

[ raises his hands in what seems like defeat, up until he says: ]

Oh? Well, I believe I would rather have untrimmed locks than hair that looks as if it were descendant of a chicken's feathers.

[ hrrrrghhhhh ]

Also not of my choice!

Worry not, it is very soft. That may be one thing you were blessed with.

[ all but snarls his next words: ]

I thank you for your kind words. I believe my heart is now at peace.

[ bows his head. ]

Anything for the beautiful princess-- I mean, prince.

A cut to the toes or the gut. Which do you prefer?

[ is about to reply when he hears something up ahead, making him tug robert off their path and into a patch of bushes at the side. pushes his companion's head down with a hand as he ducks only slightly for a beat or two, peering out from behind the foliage after a while. murmurs a little when the deer he had spotted comes into view. ]

I prefer eating instead.

[ bites down on more snarled words upon also spotting the deer. grips at riku's wrist to pry it off his head first before responding, however, his voice regaining its typical amused character. ]

Gluttony is a sin, prince. My feast for kings is not enough to fill your belly?

[ turns to robert, pointedly looking down at the bag with their "feast" in it for a long moment. looks back up at his companion. ]

Not especially.

Are you always this choosy with your meals?

I would simply enjoy having a meal that has some substance to it.

[ can't bring himself to jab at that, as he agrees. turns his gaze back to the deer instead. & after a beat: ]

You've a bow and arrow?

[ taps the long cylinder pack on his back lightly. ]
