[ it had been five days full of nothing but silently following robert along, knowing their path yet allowing the younger boy to take the lead due to his mood. who could blame him, though? he was already well aware of robert and annabelle having a close-knit relationship, one that nobody (not even himself) could wiggle their way into. despite being quite inept to the full extent of the bond the two siblings had, he was perceptive enough to realize that their parting had been quite different than their usual. this is why he ceased the typical banter he always initiated, whether it be with good intent or not.

when robert had finally spoken and begun to say more than a discussion of their plans, he knew that his neighboring prince had begun to settle back into place. dare he say it was a comfort of sorts, despite being the one that needed to be extra strong and encouraging. and with that hurtle behind them, the elder of the two moved to his rightful position once more: on robert's left side, striding next to him as if they're simply taking a walk and nothing more. he subtly kept his pace slower than usual as to not pass the boy, using the map robert had previously pilfered from the archives as a silent excuse to keep their position leveled and even, as they had finally reached territory that both of them weren't completely familiar with.

keeps to their comfortable silent for a while longer. stops in his tracks when a thought hits him and pauses. face is rather straight as he says: ]

I'm hungry.

[ swats the hand away irritably. ]

I'll behave myself. You, however? I do believe that I must return that sentiment threefold.

I would not be able to refuse a beautiful maiden should she choose to approach me. [ folds the map, putting it away when he gets the gist of their location. ] That would be quite rude.

[ raises a brow. ]

But your love won't last, I'm afraid.

My love does not have to last a lifetime. Just one night.

One evening.

[ waves him off with a hand. ]

Whichever.

[ gives him a swift thwack to an upper arm. ]

Do not push your luck.

[ moves with it, huffing out in amusement. ]

I do not need luck with matters such as these.

Ah. Then I'm sure your father will be greatly heartened to hear that you've chosen a girl at last.

I need not marry a lady if I simply wish to court her for an evening.

I may be willing to overlook an entire night should it lead to the birth of an heir.

[ pats robert's head again. ]

Ah, young one. So little you know about these matters. But that is perfectly alright, for I shall teach you everything when you are older.

[ swats it away again. ]

Do that a third time, and you will lose your thumb.

Such anger towards your hero. How unbecoming.

Having a good head on one's shoulders does not excuse them from manners.

I believe I have enough manners for the both of us, considering your temper.

[ grunts, but doesn't disagree. ]

My temper will be quelled soon enough.

[ pauses with a short frown. gives riku a sideways glance. ] Correct?

[ is about to reply when he stops in his tracks, tilting his head to listen to something in the distance. smiles slowly when he hears what believes to be the sound of people, turning to look forward to their (barely in sight) destination. ]

I think you may be right.

[ perks up when he hears the telling noises himself, his steps quickening somewhat. doesn't say anything in response, mumbling only one thing under his breath: ]

Food. Food. Food. Food. Food.

[ decides it's best that he doesn't laugh, coughing behind a hand to relieve the urge. just follows along without another word.

after some time they finally step into the lively town, unable to help himself when he pauses briefly to take in the sound that he missed the most. that split-second to himself is disturbed by the food, food, food he hears again from robert, shaking his head a little in amusement. glances between the people that move around them, directing robert's attention to one of the taverns that he spots up ahead.

is quick to order food (everything you've got he had told the barmaid, who looked at him as if he were crazy) and even quicker to find a spot they can blend easily into. relaxes and sips his ale as they wait, though it seems like it only takes a handful of minutes before the food gets brought to their table. can't help but gesture towards it a bit, knowing he doesn't have to say anything but he says it nonetheless: ]

After you.

[ is quick to dig in as soon as the plates hit the table, deaf to riku's words. pointedly ignores his manners & the amused (alarmed?) look he gets from the waitress, all but inhaling the food as they arrive one after another. only when he's about half-way full does he slow down to take a drink himself, the glazed look of hunger slowly leaving his face. swallows his latest bite, then glances up at riku questioningly. gestures at the selection still left standing after his onslaught. ]

Why are you not eating? The distance between this town and the next is not exactly the shortest in the kingdom.

[ hums a little, taking another sip of his drink. ]

Just watching you stuff your face makes me feel rather full.

[ stabs another piece of chicken. ]

Now is not the time for your jokes. Eat.

Ah, but I fear for the life of my hand if I should try. I am very fond of my hand, after all.

[ snorts & pushes a bowl of untouched soup in riku's direction. ]

Says the man who willingly tests my patience on an hourly basis.
