[ he's not really surprised to come home to an empty house, even on a saturday. he doesn't even need to call riku to know where he is; instead, he rolls his eyes to the ceiling in a long-suffering manner as he moves over the kitchen table to set the costco-bought cookies for riku's monday class. then he goes about his usual rituals: checking the fridge, making a note on the portable white-board on what they need to go shopping for, pouring himself a bowl of cereal & peeking in the bathroom to check on the ducks.

he spends a good ten minutes petting them (quack, quack) before he remembers the cereal -- now soggy. but he eats it anyway, slipping on his reading glasses to flip through the latest science journal that sora had received a free subscription while tucked into the corner of the couch, waiting for riku to get home. ]

[ clenches his fist, looking somewhat determined. ]

I do it for the good of the people. It's like saving the world all over again.

[ & at that very moment he pokes his head back into the living room. ]

HEY GUYS I THINK YOUR SOUP'S BURNING.

[ sits upright at his words, not even saying anything to tony as he runs off to save ~~rob's precious~~ the soup. ]

. . . !!

[ all but darts after riku, wanting to check up on the ~~precious~~ soup as well. ]

[ laughs and trails after them, stopping only when they all arrive. peers over rob's head. smiles widely as riku turns off the burner with his shoulders sagging slightly. ]

That sucks!

[ & he stares at the pot with this face. ]

[ stirs it a little bit, feeling only slightly hopeful as he says: ]

It's still good. Probably.

No. It's ruined.

[ tilts his entire body to try and get a good look at rob's face. ]

I CAN HELP MAKE MORE. I cook sometimes with my aunt and uncle!

[ shakes his head morosely. ]

. . . I'm going to go check on the ducks.

Are you sure Mrs Riku? I'll do it! For the sake of mankind!

Mister.

[ turns to riku, still looking morose, then turns away to walk out of the kitchen & toward the bathroom where the ducks are waiting. ]

[ ditches riku to instead follow rob. ]

What kind of soup do you like? I like tomato and rice soup! And chicken noodle! OH and sometimes this weird one my aunt makes but she makes the best food EVER EVER it's so delicious you should come try it sometime!

Ask her to pack you some and give it to Riku. He'll bring it home.

OKAY I'LL DO THAT you'll like it a lot if you like soup a lot! What other kind of food do you like? I like sandwiches! Tuna sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, ham sandwiches...!

I like most sandwiches too. Riku makes good ones.

I want a Mister Riku sandwich! Hey, do you ever pack sandwiches for him? Lunches? Lunchables? I love Lunchables, they're so good.

Nah, just normal lunches. I haven't had a Lunchable in a while.

[ gasps. ]

I'LL GO GET YOU ONE!

[ doesn't even wait for him to say anything, darting off like a rocket towards that window he came in from. ]

[ comes wandering in the direction he was sure to find rob in, catching sight of tony flinging himself out the window. silence, and then: ]

What did you do.

[ stares after tony for a moment, then just sits down in the hallway when the ducks start quacking around his ankle (streaming out of the bathroom), letting them climb onto his lap. looks up at riku when he hears him. ]

I told him I haven't had a Lunchable in a while.

...

[ just. sits down next to rob in silence as one of the ducks rolls into his own lap. ]

[ starts petting the most insistent of the ducks. ]

Do you think he'll come back?

[ shakes his head. ]

He'll most likely get distracted by something on the way to the store.
