[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

[ tilts his head to look at it, smiling a little at her choice. takes the sketchbook back so he can gently tear it out, sign him name on it, then hand it on over to her. ]

Here you go. Take good care of it, okay?

[ nods excitedly, carefully placing it on her uncle's lap (he'll surely keep it safe). takes up a green pencil to scribble her name clumsily on the drawing she was previously "helping" with (even if the 'e' is backwards and the letters aren't very consistent in their size) before handing it over to lyssa. ]

You keep this one. [ pats it when he has it in her hands. repeats him: ] Take good care of it, okay?

[ holds it close to his chest, as if showing her that he'll treasure the gift. ]

Thank you. I will.

[ fidgets a little as lyssa starts to pack up, reaching over to tug on his sleeve when she can't take it anymore. ]

Um. Will I ever see you again...?

[ blinks down at her in surprise. pushes his face into his shoulder to laugh a little (so cute) before bending down in front of her, gently prying the hand away from his shirt so she can take it into one of his own. lifts the free one, petting her hair a little. ]

Maybe someday. [ stands again, adjusting his bag. ] Be a good girl, and remember to always keep right next to your uncle when you're out, okay?

[ after she nods he turns his head to nick, taking a step away. ] I'll talk to you soon?

[ is a little surprised at the refusal, so it takes him a moment to nod in response. ]

Yeah. [ now that some of his projects are over, he can respond to a few texts. maybe. ] Have a safe trip home.

Thanks! I'll be extra careful.

[ gives alice another look, making waving motions when she raises her hand to do the same. and then he's off, feeling distinctly pleased with how well that went. ]

[ glances at alice when lyssa departs. ]

Shall we get going for that hamburger?

[ nods up at him, reaching for the drawing she had previously placed on nick's lap to take it with one hand, fumbling with the other to take her uncle's hand. ]

I am ready.

[ takes her hand & gets up from the bench, giving her a small tug so that she can hop off. ]

Well then, let's go.

[ wiggles more towards the edge of the bench before she hops off as directed, scooting along next to him when they begin their walk. ]
