[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

[ does a dismissive wave. ]

I claim at least one seat in the top five!

[ raises an eyebrow. ]

Those seats are already taken.

[ blinks, raising a hand up to count off on his fingers. ]

Robin, Alice, your supervisor... [ looks at him again. ] Those are the only ones I can think of.

[ puts a hand to his forehead & lists off: ]

My aid. Classmates. Friends. Undergraduate architecture students.

But I'm your friend now, too. [ puffs at his tea a little while his cheeks bloat in a typical pouting session. ] And I think I should get special treatment, all things considered...

[ hand lifts as if to flick & then brings it back down. ]

And help further inflate that ego of yours? No.

My ego really isn't that big. [ another sip. ] Just when I'm around you.

[ tilts his gaze toward the ceiling. ]

And why do I get such an honour?

[ shrugs a bit, smiling over at him. ]

It's just my personality when I'm with you. You act differently when you're around Alice and Robin, right? Sure, it might just be because they're family, but it's still different.

[ sighs; that's not the type of thing he likes to hear because that translates into 'only a brat with you.' wonderful. ]

Then my previous statement still holds.

[ rests the mug on a thigh, reaching out to pat his shoulder with his free hand. ]

Don't worry. Now that we're friends, I'll go easy on you.

[ rolls his eyes. ]

Much appreciated.

[ drinks down most of his tea, leaning towards him when another question comes to mind. chooses to (jokingly) voice it: ]

So what'd you get me for my birthday, huh? Eighteen is a pretty big marker in a person's life!

[ makes a considering hum despite not really know when lyssa's birthday is. or was. ]

What, my hospitality isn't enough?

[ tucks his legs close to his chest, tilting sideways into the couch with the mug balancing on his knees. ]

Well, if spending time with you like this is my gift, then yeah. It is.

[ looks down at a hand as he flexes it, open & closed. ]

I guess it is. This once. [ since both of them considered their relations (of any sort) to be over by this month. a mutual(?) gift, if anything. ]

[ nods once in agreement, letting some silence fill the room for once as he slowly takes down the rest of his tea. sits up again when he's finished, placing the mug onto the coffee table so he can stretch a little. ]

I guess I should go, then. [ inclines his head to the book nick had been reading before he dropped by. ] Have fun with your book.

[ picks up the said book & opens it across his lap again, lounging on the couch. ]

That's no hardship. [ short pause. ] Have fun at school.

[ lets out a brief laugh. ]

I will. [ there's a pause on his end as well, but only so he can lean down and plant a kiss on the top of nick's head. winks at him, speaking while he moves towards the door. ] A parting gift, from me to you.

[ can't help but chuckle softly in response, waving him off. ]

Why thank you. Now shoo. Let me know when you're in town next.

[ turns around to face nick again after he opens the door, doing a little dance as he backs out into the hall. in a sing-song voice: ]

I will, frieeend.

[ & then he closes the door, leaving him alone with his book. ]
