[ it was with some strange stroke of luck that nathan had confirmed the non-presence of albert, brianna, and damon in the mansion for the weekend, almost suspiciously double-checking with them all to make sure; albert was off to god knows where, brianna flew out to hawaii for a photo shoot, and damon was spending some quality time with his friends before the summer officially came to a close.

nathan didn't think it would be this simple. lo and behold, the mansion was completely his for the taking for at least two and a half days. this prompted the almost juvenile-like excitement that overcame him when he invited caleb over for a real two-night stay inside the mansion, to show him where he lived (where he didn't like to live) and let him explore what he normally did not allow people to see. so this is why he tugged at caleb's hand enthusiastically, his body betraying the way he tried to school his expression, knowing somewhere in the back of his mind that in the end it was quite a futile attempt.

stops when they're far enough inside the mansion, not bothering to let caleb's hand go as he turns slightly to look at him. ]

Well, here we are. [ a pause, as if his excitement was slowly wearing off. ] Again.

[ does not look at all convinced nor impressed. takes a step closer to the door that nathan seems to be guarding. ]

Is that right? Shall I escort you back to your room, then?

[ eyes dart to the door once, debating heavily on something. decides to throw caution into the wind, pushing himself away from the door to instead get closer to albert. reaches up and tugs a little at his sleeve while his expression falls into what he hopes looks like an expression from his younger days, an act that has not been done in several years. ]

H-how about I go with you instead?

[ blinks once, taken off guard. gently dislodges his sleeve while a light frown cross his expression fleetingly. ]

To my study?

[ pushes back the force of irritation that bubbles up in the pit of his stomach, deciding to put his hands on his hips instead. ]

If that's where you're going.

[ raises another eyebrow, regaining his center when he spots a more familiar expression & posture on nathan. takes a step closer to him, a hand lifting to rest the back of it on nathan's forehead. ]

Hm. Lacking a fever. Quite a mystery.

[ slaps the hand away instantly, taking a step backwards. then looks away with a frown. ]

Nevermind. Forget I asked.

[ crosses his arms over his chest, gaze going back to albert. ]

Why're you even here anyway? Don't you have somewhere better to be?

For example?

Wherever you were before you were here, obviously!

No place holds my heart as tightly as does my home, baby brother.

Whatever, like I care.

[ chuckles lightly. then his eyes flicker again to the door when he feels as if he's heard some rustling. ]

. . . Hm?

[ doesn't seem to notice him looking at the door, forgetting about it in favor of a greater evil: ]

What the hell are you standing there for? Just go already! Geez, you're so slow!

[ lets the comment fly right over his head, taking his sweet time to gaze at the door further.

then, finally, after a long moment, inclines his head once in farewell. ]

I hope to find the mansion in passable condition when I return.

[ just fixes him with a stare while slowly raising an eyebrow, not gracing him with a reply. ]

[ one more glance at the door, then he's stepping up to nathan to give him the customary kiss to the forehead. steps back. ]

A good night to you, baby brother.

[ & then he's off, footsteps echoing down the hall as he heads for his study. ]

[ pushes the door open to poke his head out after a long, tense moment. ]

[ was glaring down the hallway at albert in the few moments that pass by, reaching up to childishly try and wipe off the kiss with the back of his sleeve somehow. & then he stands there, the feelings of anger slowly lowering while something else in him rises. curses underneath his breath and scrubs at his face and sniffs once, berating himself for a repeat performance (third time for the night) in silence.

when the frustration and something else he can't quite discern isn't as high he turns back to the door, jumping in surprise when he notices caleb peeking out from behind. expression wavers slightly, unsure of how he should feel, so he goes with the first thing that comes to mind: ]

Hey. S-sorry for pushing you in there... are you okay?

[ eyes seem to go a little glazed as he double-checks albert's location. then his attention goes back to nathan. reaches for him worriedly. ]

I am okay. Is Nathan?

[ automatically comes over to hold (cling) onto him. seems to recover sooner than later, however, opting to lift his head a bit to smile up at caleb. ]

Yeah. [ releases an arm, lifting it a bit. ] Manly, remember?

[ nuzzles the top of nathan's head, shoulders drooping a bit. cannot seem to bring himself to return the smile, his worry continuous. ]

Is scary?

[ expression drops at caleb's mood, deciding that it's best to just press his face into his chest and hold on. ]

Not scary, no. It just... [ hurts.]

[ tugs on caleb's hand without finishing that line of thought, looking anxious. ]

L-let's go to my room, okay?

[ nods & closes his good eye so prevent any stumbling as he nudges them along the fasted route to nathan's room in concentrated silence. ]

[ is the one to trail behind this time, looking at the floor as they go along. time seems to go quicker than he imagined as he looks up and notices his room, taking on a brisker pace so that he can open his door, wait for caleb to follow, then shut and lock the door before leaning on it with a sigh. ]
