[ it had been five days full of nothing but silently following robert along, knowing their path yet allowing the younger boy to take the lead due to his mood. who could blame him, though? he was already well aware of robert and annabelle having a close-knit relationship, one that nobody (not even himself) could wiggle their way into. despite being quite inept to the full extent of the bond the two siblings had, he was perceptive enough to realize that their parting had been quite different than their usual. this is why he ceased the typical banter he always initiated, whether it be with good intent or not.

when robert had finally spoken and begun to say more than a discussion of their plans, he knew that his neighboring prince had begun to settle back into place. dare he say it was a comfort of sorts, despite being the one that needed to be extra strong and encouraging. and with that hurtle behind them, the elder of the two moved to his rightful position once more: on robert's left side, striding next to him as if they're simply taking a walk and nothing more. he subtly kept his pace slower than usual as to not pass the boy, using the map robert had previously pilfered from the archives as a silent excuse to keep their position leveled and even, as they had finally reached territory that both of them weren't completely familiar with.

keeps to their comfortable silent for a while longer. stops in his tracks when a thought hits him and pauses. face is rather straight as he says: ]

I'm hungry.

[ realizing that the shaking is not working, he stills, deciding to up the volume of his voice instead. ]

You will fall, you fool! Wake up!

[ blinks at that, tilting his head a little to try and look over at robert. ]

I have slept in trees before. This is nothing.

[ pauses for a moment. ]

. . . I do not believe this should be a point of pride, prince.

[ eventually shifts and sits up straight when his body doesn't feel like jelly any longer, blinking over in robert's general direction. starts to feel awkward talking in this particular position, thus he stands and grips onto the trunk of the tree with a hand as he moves, peering around it when he gets closer to robert. ]

Oh?

[ stares up at him, not moving an inch. ]

What in the Lord's name are you doing? Sit back down.

[ snorts in amusement, settling down on the limb closest to robert. ]

Yes, mother.

[ grunts, strangely not rising to the bait. slumps against the bark a little, as if in pain. ]

. . . I am hungry.

[ dares to look downward. is pleased because the bear looks like it's sleeping, but is rather disgruntled because it's still there... ]

[ pauses. looks back up at robert. ]

Do not cry. I am sure it will leave soon.

[ bristles for two seconds before apparently losing steam. ]

By the end of this journey, your promises will mean about as much as a single penny.

[ swings his legs around a little, pretending to look hurt. ]

You pain me so.

[ grumbled: ]

If only that were true.

[ watches him carefully, not speaking for the moment. sighs quietly and thinks, eyes wandering. ]

I wonder if throwing something will help...

[ sits up straighter when an idea comes to him. looks over at some of the smaller limbs sticking out at awkward angles, ones that are easier to remove. doesn't hesitate in moving to get closer to them, reaching to pull his dagger out and begin cutting some of those away in silence. ]

[ glances over at what riku is doing with some effort, then huffs out a breath. ]

An ambitious idea, but do cease in wasting further energy. Striking it will only enrage it further.

Shh.

[ settles down the spot, gathering enough of those branches to bundle them up and carefully set them on his lap. rummages in his bag to take out some of the rope he had brought, wrapping enough of it around the branches so that they'd stay together as a group. weighs it with his hands, nodding a little to himself when he decides that it's heavy enough. ]

[ hops back over to robert easily, though careful to not disturb him. murmurs a little: ]

Can you manage climbing down by yourself?

. . . [ stares at him in brief confusion for a moment, frowning. glances at the bundle of branches in riku's hands, at the bear at the base of the tree, back to riku's face. comprehension is slower to dawn on him than usual, but it eventually arrives, making him nod when he feels that he understands the other prince's plan. ]

Yes. It shouldn't be any more difficult than climbing up.

[ hums a little, smiling at him. ]

Good boy.

[ & then he chucks the bundle as far as he can possibly manage, successful in waking and distracting the bear enough to have it run off in another direction. is quick in helping robert up regardless of the boy's previous statement, letting him go first to make sure that he'll get down in time. ]

[ doesn't protest at the given aid, concentrating on climbing down as quickly as his limbs would allow instead. starts out slowly, but seems to get the hang of it soon enough, as he speeds up half-way down the tree. when his feet hit solid ground, he glances up at riku & jerks his head to the opposite direction of that of the bear, readjusting his bags quickly to begin quietly sneaking away. ]

[ it is only when he hears that light thud of robert's feet on the ground does he move, expertly climbing and jumping the remainder of the way down without a sound attached to his movements. also does his share of adjusting, glancing over his shoulder only once before following robert. ]

[ doesn't speak, speed walking as soon as he feels that noise is allowable. it's in that sort-of silence that he leads the way, uncaring of which direction they may be heading. only when he feels a little safe does he slow down & gives riku a sideways glance. looks away soon afterward, however, clearing his throat a little. ]

. . . Good job.

[ raises an eyebrow down and him, quirking a small smile. lifts a hand, placing it on top of robert's hair while ruffling the strands a little fondly. ]

You're welcome.

[ releases his hold soon after to pull out the map instead, looking down at it before shifting his eyes to survey their surroundings. back to the map, sounding a little surprised. ]

We might actually be closer to the town after that fiasco.

[ blinks, glancing up at him with no small amount of hope. ]
