[ having decided that meeting anthony half-way would be best for this particular... conversation, he walks a bit slowly, quite aware that his dorm was closer to the school than his friend-slash-goalie's house. (that and he would probably have to struggle with his mode of transportation for a while.) so instead of the usual ten minutes it takes him to arrive to this particular destination, he gives himself thirty, casually making his way to one of the benches underneath a tree.

takes a seat, pulls out his cellphone, then begins to check his messages as he waits; it would be at least another fifteen minute wait, one he was finally willing to be patient for. after all, he wasn't expecting much, anyway. when it came to feelings, expectations were the worst things to have, or so he had logically deducted throughout his childhood. besides, it wouldn't be the end of the world if anything negative happened. this was anthony, after all, the boy who clucked and bawked louder than he spoke or made any semblance of sense with his words.

... it almost made him second-guess himself. almost.

pockets his phone and tilts his head backwards instead, letting it rest against the top of the bench. just simply stares up into the branches and leaves of the tree, allowing himself to show a rare display of being lost in some non-thoughts for the time being. ]

[ ignores the way the lady looks at them oddly, flipping open the menu to take a glance at it. lets out a hm, shutting it again. eyes back up to anthony. ]

So. [ takes a moment to think on this. decides on the following for now: ] How has your summer been so far?

[ blinks, caught slightly off guard. glances away briefly via the corner of his eyes before shrugging. ]

Same old. Ish. My dad's cholesterol level went down.

[ another nod, another bout of silence. interlaces his hands together, placing them on the table. more silence, and then: ]

I have called you here today to tell you something. [ takes a glance around with his eyes as he speaks. ] This isn't exactly the ideal place to discuss this, but it will do.

[ twitches. looks away. twitches. looks back.

nervously: ]

. . . Uh. Am I getting fired?

[ looks mildly surprised at this. ]

Why would you think you were being fired?

[ mentally shaking his brain for something-- oh. ]

You said I was. . . distracted and stuff. Way before.

Well, yes, you were quite distracted... but it does not warrant the need to fire you from your position on the field.

[ only begins speaking when the waitress comes back with a bowl of peanuts and gummy worms, raising an eyebrow at her until she goes away again. sits up straighter in his chair, nodding. ]

We have known one another for almost two years now. It had taken me quite some time, but I soon found myself willing to spend more time with you. We then became friends, much to my brief confusion, and logically I shouldn't have been this taken with you.

Then your younger brother asked if I liked you, and I said yes, I do have an attraction towards you. This time, however, it is different. [ pauses. knowing he won't catch the drift: ] This time, I mean it in a romantic sense.

[ holds up a finger. looks down at the table, ignoring the treats in favour of nursing his shock. ]

I, uh. Sorry, one sec. [ to himself, starts mumbling: ] It's not April. It's not. . . I didn't drink any sprite. I don't think I'm hallucinating. I don't do drugs, and no one was smoking weed in the stairwell. I don't think I'm dying. Probably. Was it the bed? The bread? The toaster?

[ & he's comfortable just waiting it out, as he typically does. after he feels like anthony has had his share of babbling: ]

It is quite alright if you do not feel the same way towards me. Rejection is quite common in these situations, or so I have been told. [ gives anthony a moment to let that soak in, if he's listening at all. ] I don't expect an answer right away. You are free to not say anything at all, if you wish.

[ head snaps up. blurts out: ]

No! No, this isn't a rejection. Seriously. I'm just. Kind of. Short-circuiting-- [ picks up a gummy worm & thrusts it towards michael. ] Gummy worm?!

[ blinks at the offering. slowly lifts a hand to accept it, holding onto it while staring at anthony a little dumbly (interested, slightly confused). ]

[ hunches into himself, looking a little small as he stares down at the table again. ]

. . . Can I postpone my answer? [ he couldn't say anything. he shouldn't. not right now. it wouldn't be fair & probably wouldn't be right. thoughts go briefly to tony (that jerk) before shaking himself out of it. --see? that's the proof right there that told him that he shouldn't say yes or no. ]
