[ of course, as it turns out, the one thing that she's forgotten to mention to lyssa was the fact that she didn't really have a convenient method of transportation. all she'd asked for the location & time, thinking that would have been enough. of course it hadn't been.

... oh well.

hooking her small messenger bag-slash-purse on her shoulder, she bids her dad goodbye after reassuring him that she'll be back by ten (yes, yes, don't worry, just the mall--). & promptly feels glad that she left two hours before the time she's supposed to meet lyssa 'cause she just missed the bus & the next one won't be arriving for another half-hour. she settles down, pews & waits. long story short (after she subtracts the bus ride & all the weird things her hair is doing in the humidity), she manages to get to the mall in once piece: none of her organs are missing, her dress isn't ripped up, & no one had shoved her head down a toilet. day's pretty good so far (where's wood to knock on when she needed some?). 'cept the fact that she's probably a few minutes late, but--

... oh well.

she'll apologize to lyssa as soon as she can find him. ]

[ nods and wiggles and tries to climb into nick's lap while talking. ]

I spent five minutes on it. That's more than four or three or two or one...

[ lifts his hands to accommodate her wiggling, only letting them back down when she seems to settle. ]

Hmm. Are you sure it only took you five minutes?

Uh-huh! [ sways her feet a little to and fro. ] I want to be just like you so I gotta be quick.

Nah, you're too good to be just like me. [ transfers the piece of 'art' over to one hand gently so that he could use the other to give her head a fond pat. ]

Anyway, I think this one's going into the album too. You want to go get it? [ glances briefly at robin. ] Or ask mommy to get it?

Mommy. I want to stay here. [ looks over at robin with her big doe eyes. ] Please?

[ rolls her eyes, lips quirking into a smile. ]

Oh, who could say no to a face like that? [ stands, taking a glance at nick. ] Same place as always?

[ looks rather pleased with himself. ]

Yep. The most recent one is the one farthest on the right.

[ shakes her head at them fondly, moving to go retrieve the album. a minute later she's back and taking a seat on the edge of the couch again, handing over the aforementioned item to nick. ]

[ taking it, he lays it across alice's lap & opens it. ]

You want to pick the spot this one goes into?

[ nod nod nod. uses both of her hands to turn the pages. ]

I will pick the best spot ever. [ turns another page. ] The best...

[ & then she stops on a place in the middle of the album, confidently pointing at the page. ]

[ moves his arms around her to carefully slip the piece of paper in an open slot that alice has pointed out. holds out the book in front of them so that they can both see it from a distance. ]

How's that look to you?

[ tilts her head to the left, then the right, then lifts her hands to give two thumbs up. ]

Lovely!

Great. I thought so too. [ brings the album back to her lap so that she could flip through it. ]

[ smiles at them fondly while alice looks at her masterpieces, reaching over to brush some of nick's hair away from his face. when her daughter starts humming another song (obviously lost in her own thoughts by now): ]

How is your hand feeling today?

[ tilts his head toward robin's hand. ]

It could be worse. [ that is to say, not too bad. relatively. ]

[ kisses his temple, circling an arm around his shoulders in a makeshift hug. ]

Decent drawing day, then?

[ leans against her as much as he can without tipping alice over. ]

I have a half-finished draft, yeah. [ closes his eyes briefly. ] Gotta finish it up tonight and show it to my supervisor tomorrow.

[ rests against him as well, thinking on his words briefly. ]

Do you need me to get someone to help you?

[ smiles ruefully. ]

Maybe, if the professor still haven't gotten used to my chicken scratches. I'll let you know. [ short pause. ] Thanks.

Or I could go scold your professor for you, whichever. [ looks down at alice when she doesn't hear the pages of the album turning anymore, amused that she's starting to nod off again. ] But for now, I think I need to get the little one into bed.

[ looks down at alice & quirks a small smile. ]

Good idea. [ carefully closes the album so that alice can be extracted with little trouble. ] You want to take the rest of the cheesecake?

[ shakes her head, reaching over to lift her daughter up into her arms. ]

I'm sure she'll want to come over again soon, if you're not busy. Save it until then.

[ sets the album aside & gets to his feet, intending to walk them out. ]

Alright. Sometime this week?

[ tilts downward to grab her purse, lifting it onto her shoulder. adjusts alice before walking to the door. ]

In a few days, probably. [ pauses in saying anything else for a moment, and then: ] I'll be sure to call first this time.

[ snorts softly in amusement. ]

That'd be appreciated. [ reaches over to give alice's head one last pat. ] Or give me a specific day and I'll book it off for you two.
