[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

[ nods, coloring the drawing's ground purple. ]

Yes. She likes animals and I do too...

[ stares at the big mess of purple then shakes his head fondly. ]

You should talk to your mom about getting a pet.

[ switches out the purple pencil for yellow, drawing a happy-looking sun in the corner of the page. ]

She says I can when I am older. Maybe when I am uncle's age.

Hmm. . . no, I don't think you have to wait that long. [ short pause. ] What would you like?

[ eyes are wide when she looks up at him again. ]

Something fluffy.

There's a lot of things that are fluffy. A small dog, a rabbit. . .

[ looks torn in her choices. ]

It has to be quiet... so something that's quiet and fluffy.

[ shakes his head, amused. ]

Still the same choices, doodlebug. Some fluffy dogs are quiet.

Then I want a puppy!

Okay. When your mom says it's alright for you to have one, we'll go buy one together, alright?

[ wiggles to reach over and latch onto him, squeezing as much as her little body could. ]

Uncle Nick is the best uncle!

[ hugs her back as tightly as he dares. ]

Just for you, doodlebug. [ pulls back. ] You feel hungry yet?

[ nods, rubbing her stomach a little. ]

Yeah... can we eat now?

[ pulls away a tad. ]

Hm. What did we decide on again?

[ raises a hand, as if answering a question in class. ]

Hamburgers.

Right, hamburgers.

[ seems to take a moment to think & then glances at lyssa. back at alice. ] Do you want to ask your new friend to come with us?

[ turns to look at lyssa, fidgeting a little. ]

Do you want to come too...?

[ wavers a little bit, caught between two thoughts (this probably isn't a good idea and she is so cute how can i say no to her). unfortunately, the first one overrides the second feeling this time, shaking his head a bit while looking apologetic. ]

I'm sorry, but I should be getting home. But... [ rummages into his bag, pulling out his sketchbook. hands it on over to alice. ] Since you liked my trees so much, would you like another drawing? You can help me improve!

[ almost looks a little sad that lyssa won't be coming along, up until that drawing comment. instead she looks excited, taking the sketchbook to begin flipping through it. stops when she comes on what looks like a profile shot of nick, looking up at him. back down at the paper. up at him. without asking, she turns to lyssa again: ]

This one!

[ tilts his head to look at it, smiling a little at her choice. takes the sketchbook back so he can gently tear it out, sign him name on it, then hand it on over to her. ]

Here you go. Take good care of it, okay?

[ nods excitedly, carefully placing it on her uncle's lap (he'll surely keep it safe). takes up a green pencil to scribble her name clumsily on the drawing she was previously "helping" with (even if the 'e' is backwards and the letters aren't very consistent in their size) before handing it over to lyssa. ]

You keep this one. [ pats it when he has it in her hands. repeats him: ] Take good care of it, okay?

[ holds it close to his chest, as if showing her that he'll treasure the gift. ]

Thank you. I will.

[ fidgets a little as lyssa starts to pack up, reaching over to tug on his sleeve when she can't take it anymore. ]

Um. Will I ever see you again...?

[ blinks down at her in surprise. pushes his face into his shoulder to laugh a little (so cute) before bending down in front of her, gently prying the hand away from his shirt so she can take it into one of his own. lifts the free one, petting her hair a little. ]

Maybe someday. [ stands again, adjusting his bag. ] Be a good girl, and remember to always keep right next to your uncle when you're out, okay?

[ after she nods he turns his head to nick, taking a step away. ] I'll talk to you soon?

[ is a little surprised at the refusal, so it takes him a moment to nod in response. ]

Yeah. [ now that some of his projects are over, he can respond to a few texts. maybe. ] Have a safe trip home.
