[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

[ looks up from his plate, interested. ]

Is that your favorite kind?

[ blinks. then nods. ]

Yeah. Simple, but it tastes good.

Then we will start with that! [ grabs one of the rolls, tearing off a piece of it. ] When you get better, you should invite Robin and her daughter over to dinner. Impress them with your skills.

[ snorts a little. ]

Nah. Robin would probably give me tips on how to improve.

[ uses the foot he was previously nudging nick with to instead pat the side of his leg. ]

I'm sure it's just done out of love.

Maybe. [ finally gives a nudge back before tucking his leg back. ] She might be more forgiving if I say it's your recipe.

[ blinks when a thought strikes him, making him ask: ]

Did she do all the cooking and stuff when you guys were younger?

[ makes a 'hmm' sound in thought. mostly trying to think of if there's anything that he did cook & ... nope. ]

. . . Most of it.

Well, now you can do most of it! [ eats the rest of his roll, speaking after he chews and swallows. ] At least on the holiday season, anyway. You go over there a lot around that time, don't you?

Yeah. But I'd rather help than mess anything up. [ especially when its his doodlebug's holiday on the line. ]

[ shoulders shake a little from laughter. ]

I'm sure she'll appreciate the help, then.

[ ...? that shaking is from laughter, right? ]

What's so funny?

[ shakes his head. ]

Nothing. You're just considerate. I like that about you.

[ looks a bit... embarrassed? somewhere in his deadpan. ]

They're family.

Doesn't mean that you have to be nice to them. [ after nudging some of his food around: ] But I agree. Family is something to be cherished and given special attention to.

[ quirks a smile at that. ]

Couldn't have said it better. [ watches the nudging & raises an eyebrow. ] What, not hungry?

[ yawns a little bit behind a hand while shaking his head. ]

Just tired. I woke up early to work on a few projects that are due after break, then I had to go babysit in the afternoon. I took a nap after that, but it wasn't very long. [ raises a hand, giving him a thumbs up. ] But I like satisfying, productive days!

[ reaches over to flick him lightly. ]

You could have come over tomorrow, you know.

[ & he makes his usual 'ow i just got flicked' face. ]

But I really wanted to see you today...

So you could fall asleep on your feet?

[ sighs a little out his nose, childishly pushing his food around his plate again. ]

Fine, fine. I'll go home and sleep after I eat.

[ while he finishes off the rest of his food. ]

. . . You can come back tomorrow if you want.

[ looks up, surprised by the invitation. ]

You're not busy?

Beyond having to do a few sketches? No.

[ slowly smiles a little to himself. after taking another bite of food: ]

Then I'll come over tomorrow. [ another nom. ] I'll make you lunch, too.
