[ peers at her curiously, but answers dutifully. ]

< He's sixteen. >

[ thinks about it, eyes lifting skyward... then nods to herself. ]

< That explains things. >

[ finally turns her attention back to him, swinging their connected hands to and fro as they go along. ]

< So! What do you guys do when you're together? >

[ starts yammering on cue: ]

< If he has homework, I try to help him with it. I'm not very good, but I'm trying! We sit on the couch, and sometimes he lets us hug, and we sometimes watch movies. Even if it makes me dizzy a lot, it's fun! >

[ laughs and scoots a bit closer, head tilting to put it on top of caleb's. ]

< It sounds like you guys have a lot of fun together! I am very glad. >

[ is stationary for a bit before he turns his head a little so that he can give her a quick kiss to the cheek. ]

< I'm trying really hard to be happy here. He helps a lot. >

[ blinks in surprise, then slowly smiles down at him fondly. ]

< Have you told him this? >

[ pauses to think a little & then nods slowly. ]

< I told him that I like him, and that he's really nice. >

[ goes silent after his words, simply staring at him. ]

[ --then starts laughing, using her free hand to give him a hair ruffle. ]

< You're so cute! Those are two completely different things, silly! >

[ looks at her through his messed bangs. ]

< They are? >

< Of course! >

[ looks up at the sky, humming briefly. ]

< It's easy to tell someone that you like them, or that they're nice, but telling them that you need them and that they're a significant part of your life is another story altogether. >

[ turns her eyes downward again, tilting her head a bit. ]

< In other words, he might not understand the extent of his worth to you with just saying that you like him and think he's nice. You want him to be fully aware of this. >

[ listens intently as he always does when she speaks, not even nodding so that he can properly memorize her words. ]

[ then looks down. & then up. & then back down. & then finally nods with a slightly shaky smile. ]

< Okay. I'll tell him if Hilda thinks he should know. >

[ stops and gently slips her hand away from his, bringing both of hers up to place them on his arms before swooping down so they're at eye-level. ]

< Sweetheart, you should only do things if you think it's right. I am simply giving you my opinion, and I would never think less of you if you didn't take my thoughts into consideration. >

[ tucks some of his hair behind an ear, giving an encouraging look. ]

< You are far smarter than you give yourself credit for. I trust that you'll come to your own conclusions without any help. >

[ shakes his head. ]

< But I trust Hilda. >

[ puts a hand to his chest. ]

< Erm. I think there is something here that I don't know how to say. >

[ laughs softly, patting that hand. ]

< It's alright, you don't have to say anything at all. >

[ finally stands again, repositioning their hands back into a holding position. ]

< In exchange for listening to an old woman's rambling, how about I buy you some ice cream? >
