[ of course, as it turns out, the one thing that she's forgotten to mention to lyssa was the fact that she didn't really have a convenient method of transportation. all she'd asked for the location & time, thinking that would have been enough. of course it hadn't been.

... oh well.

hooking her small messenger bag-slash-purse on her shoulder, she bids her dad goodbye after reassuring him that she'll be back by ten (yes, yes, don't worry, just the mall--). & promptly feels glad that she left two hours before the time she's supposed to meet lyssa 'cause she just missed the bus & the next one won't be arriving for another half-hour. she settles down, pews & waits. long story short (after she subtracts the bus ride & all the weird things her hair is doing in the humidity), she manages to get to the mall in once piece: none of her organs are missing, her dress isn't ripped up, & no one had shoved her head down a toilet. day's pretty good so far (where's wood to knock on when she needed some?). 'cept the fact that she's probably a few minutes late, but--

... oh well.

she'll apologize to lyssa as soon as she can find him. ]

[ eats another part of the cake, setting it aside on the counter before taking a few steps to the fridge. ]

I bet you do anyway. [ opens the fridge door, peering inside. ] What would you like to drink?

[ hums in approval, taking the cups so she can fill one with orange juice (tosses away the empty carton), one with milk (sniffs it first to make sure that it's actually good), then one with some water for herself. hands him his cup, walking to the living room with the rest of her items in hand. ]

Wine. [ sets the glass of milk next to alice's plate. ] That's on my list of things you should keep over here for when I visit.

[ takes the cup & follows after her, settling himself next to alice when they're back out in the living room. raises an eyebrow. ]

Sure, why not? Red or white?

[ stares at him for a moment. huffs out in amusement before she sits on alice's other side. sets her own things down. ]

I was joking, I wouldn't make a poor grad student pay for my booze. I'll bring it over when I feel like a long chat is in order.

[ leans back into the couch with a soft sigh. ]

. . . If I buy it, can we skip the long chat?

Very good. [ continues to play with her hair when she goes back to her cake, attention back on nick. ] Maybe she can join in when she can count to twenty.

[ lifts her other hand to pat nick's head, speaking as if she's talking to a two year old. ]

[ that reminds her of something, so she turns her gaze back to alice when she's almost done with her cheesecake. ]

You have something to give to your uncle, don't you?

[ licks at her fingers a little after scrubbing off the crumbs on her cheeks and mouth... then nods furiously, reaching over to grab the purple construction paper with a crayon scribble on it. shows it off to nick. ]

I drew you a butterfly!

[ bats robin's hand away, attention swerving back to alice. after putting the plate with half his slice left over next to his cup of juice, he takes the drawing & lets himself smile widely again. ]

Thanks, doodlebug. [ makes a point of inspecting it thoroughly, looking up after a solid ten seconds have passed. ] Did you improve?

[ nods and wiggles and tries to climb into nick's lap while talking. ]

I spent five minutes on it. That's more than four or three or two or one...

[ lifts his hands to accommodate her wiggling, only letting them back down when she seems to settle. ]

Hmm. Are you sure it only took you five minutes?

Uh-huh! [ sways her feet a little to and fro. ] I want to be just like you so I gotta be quick.

Nah, you're too good to be just like me. [ transfers the piece of 'art' over to one hand gently so that he could use the other to give her head a fond pat. ]

Anyway, I think this one's going into the album too. You want to go get it? [ glances briefly at robin. ] Or ask mommy to get it?

Mommy. I want to stay here. [ looks over at robin with her big doe eyes. ] Please?

Oh, who could say no to a face like that? [ stands, taking a glance at nick. ] Same place as always?
