[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

[ smiles and nods. ]

Maybe! I guess we'll have to wait and see.

[ there's a pause here when his expression changes, sitting up again slowly. shifts his eyes over at him again. ]

Can I ask you a question?

[ blinks at the sudden question & frowns a little in confusion, but ends up nodding anyway. ]

Sure.

Um. It was my birthday yesterday. [ plays with his hands a little bit, tilting his head in confusion once he looks up at nick again. ] So why haven't you kicked me out yet?

[ is silent for a moment & then he's shifting so that he's sitting on the couch properly with no slouch. glances at lyssa & then looks away, thinking. ]

. . . I think. [ another pause, wording his next phrase carefully. ] A better question would be why you haven't walked out yet.

[ looks surprised at that, then confused. tries to reason that question out for a moment.

... ? ]

Why would I walk out?

[ raises an eyebrow. ]

Why wouldn't you?

Because you haven't told me to leave yet. [ pauses, considering him momentarily. ] I mean, if you still need something, then I'm fine with that. But I've expired, haven't I?

[ & his eyebrow... goes even higher. lifts a hand to his face. ]

Okay. [ what? ] Why don't you explain that logic first?

[ sits back on the couch a little, nodding slightly. ]

Well, you only like people underage, don't you? That's why you kept me around, right? Now that I'm eighteen, I've expired.

[ leans back into the cushions into his original spot so that he can slide the hand over his eyes, exasperated. sighs. ]

And here we have a pitfall of generalization.

[ glances at him curiously. ]

What do you mean?

[ slides the hand off his face & rests it on his stomach. ]

Why did you think I only like underage people?

[ shrugs, tilting his head so it rests against the top of the couch. ]

Because you kept me around for so long. Why else would you?

Several reasons. [ but doesn't go into that for now. ] But was that the only explanation that you could think of?

Possibly for legals reasons. But that didn't stop the others from telling me to go.

[ 'others'-- huh. okay. leans forward & over to flick him lightly on the temple. ]

If a scenario breaks a known pattern, people usually start looking for alternate explanations.

[ flinches a little, sitting up again. it takes him a while (he didn't expect that response) but in the end he lifts a hand to rub his temple. ]

Well I didn't think about that, okay? It's all I'm used to...

Boxed thinking. And you call yourself an artist. [ shakes his head & gets to his feet. ] I need a drink.

[ short pause. ] You want anything?

[ there's a pause on his end too, observing nick for a moment. finally smiles again. ]

Do you have any tea?

[ furrows his brows a little. eventually nods, but makes a 'get up' motion with his hand. ]

Yeah, but you make it.

[ huffs, making a show of getting up and shuffling on over. ]

But I'm the guest...

[ & he starts moving over to the kitchen area. ]

Wrong. Your guest status expired a year ago.

[ joins him, leaning back on the counter while nudging one of nick's calves gently with his toes. ]
