[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

[ takes the utensils, thinking on the question. a long pause later: ]

Seven, maybe?

I was out in the playgrounds at that age.

[ winks, moving on over to the table. ]

So was I, but I thought about my future at a young age. [ takes a seat and sets his plate down. ] When you have parents that have been together since they were kids, you can't help but wonder, you know?

I guess. [ settles down in the seat across from lyssa. ] Still, the future usually isn't what you think about as a kid.

[ picks up his fork, nomming a piece of chicken. ]

True, but it's always good to dream and question things, anyway, especially at that age. I was a really curious kid to begin with, so it was nothing new to my parents.

[ while he tries some of the vegetables & ... blinks. putting the current topic on hold as he stops to comment: ]

This is pretty good.

[ also blinks, though for an entirely different reason. leans in a bit, looking almost a little hopeful. ]

You really like it?

[ raises an eyebrow. ]

You're surprised?

[ shakes his head, grinning as he noms on some of his own food. ]

No, just happy!

[ noms down a few more bites. ]

Well, it looks like all your hard work's paid off.

[ sets an elbow on the table, placing his chin on the edge of his palm as he watches nick eat. ]

I'll cook amazing things for you more often.

[ after being half-way through his portion of vegetables, he pauses in brief thought. ]

. . . Why not teach me instead?

[ looks surprised at that, thus he has to stop and think (reboot his brain). eventually he slowly smiles, nodding. ]

Okay. I'd like that a lot.

[ feigns thoughtfulness as he cuts his chicken. ]

How much are you charging?

[ also moves on to another portion of his food, speaking in a sing-song (jokingly) manner: ]

Two hugs and a kiss!

[ also jokingly: ]

Per class? That's quite expensive.

It's usually three hugs and two kisses, but I lowered the price as a holiday special, just for you.

Guess I should take the deal in that case.

[ lifts a finger, pointing at him briefly. ]

I'll hold you to that. No backing out, now.

Well, that'd depend on the quality of the first lesson.

So we'd have a practice session beforehand?

[ blinks. he'd been talking about the 'actual' first lesson, but-- ]

That's not a bad idea.

[ lifts a hand to pat his own back. ]

I have good ideas most of the time.

[ noms on his chicken. ]

That's just inviting bad luck.

[ puffs out his cheeks, childishly nudging nick's leg with the tips of his toes. ]
