[ it had been five days full of nothing but silently following robert along, knowing their path yet allowing the younger boy to take the lead due to his mood. who could blame him, though? he was already well aware of robert and annabelle having a close-knit relationship, one that nobody (not even himself) could wiggle their way into. despite being quite inept to the full extent of the bond the two siblings had, he was perceptive enough to realize that their parting had been quite different than their usual. this is why he ceased the typical banter he always initiated, whether it be with good intent or not.

when robert had finally spoken and begun to say more than a discussion of their plans, he knew that his neighboring prince had begun to settle back into place. dare he say it was a comfort of sorts, despite being the one that needed to be extra strong and encouraging. and with that hurtle behind them, the elder of the two moved to his rightful position once more: on robert's left side, striding next to him as if they're simply taking a walk and nothing more. he subtly kept his pace slower than usual as to not pass the boy, using the map robert had previously pilfered from the archives as a silent excuse to keep their position leveled and even, as they had finally reached territory that both of them weren't completely familiar with.

keeps to their comfortable silent for a while longer. stops in his tracks when a thought hits him and pauses. face is rather straight as he says: ]

I'm hungry.

Then explain -- [ gestures at the area, then pulls out the dagger. ] -- this, you-- you--

[ trails off, unable to find the proper insult in his state of mind. pushes himself onto his feet, twirling the weapon once as he approaches with an intent to murder written across his expression. ]

It was you who grabbed onto I!

[ but he wisely gets up anyway, not even bothering to dust himself off as he takes a few steps back. ]

[ & he's starting to stomp forward. ]

Lies do not help your case.

[ lifts his hands as if telling him that he means no harm, but his face goes deadpan as he shifts back to his typical ~~smartass~~ attitude. ]

How could I force you to hold onto me? The logic in your case is off, my prince.

[ continues to close the distance between them, the dagger going up into an pre-stab pose. ]

It would not have occurred if you had not trespassed on my territory!

[ steps back again, though he can't seem to keep his mouth from running. ]

Trespassed on your territory? [ glances at the space they were previously at. back to robert. ] I believe it is you who are at fault here.

I've had enough of your lies! En garde!

If you kill me now, then who would be the one to fetch your food for you?

[ stops in his tracks immediately while the dagger lowers itself slowly. the frown flattens out into something more neutral & questioning. ]

. . . Food?

[ inclines his head a little. ]

Yes, Your Highness.

Oh.

[ puts the dagger away entirely. turns his head to the side as he yawns, finally conscious enough to take a glance around the surroundings. back to riku: ] And the menu?

Mushrooms and berries. [ runs a hand through his hair, relaxing fully with a small sigh. ] I found them after you fell asleep.

[ grunts & goes back to where their blankets still lie on the grass, sluggishly picking them up & folding them. ]

Delightful. Another meal for nuns.

[ wanders back on over as well, squatting next to his bag to pull out their map. places it on the ground, smoothing it out while staring down at it thoughtfully. ]

We should be nearing a town soon. If we keep going north, we should be there before nightfall.

[ straightens out his back upon hearing those words, pausing half-way into putting their blankets away into their pack. a small smile twitches at his lips against his will, looking more energized than he has been in the past few days. ]

Sooner than I expected. So I may expect a warm meal and bed for tonight, then?

If you cease in your attempts to murder me, yes.

Hm. [ a dramatic pause. ] I suppose I can restrain myself for a few hours.

[ grunts quietly at that before turning away from robert, pinching the bridge of his nose and rubbing his face a little bit to ward off anything bad. turns back to begin packing up their things. ]

It will take more than a few hours, Your Highness.

You need not worry. You have escaped with your life this far, have you not?

[ puts on a smile, but just for show. ]

I suppose.

[ stands when he has everything situated, handing robert his things. ]

Shall we?

[ accepts them & shoulders what he can while also picking up the bag containing all their sleeping gear. gestures forward. ]

Onwards, then. I'm at the mercy of your lead.

[ just holds his head up higher with those words, beginning their trek onward. it is only after some silence that he pauses, eyes averting elsewhere as he stands there and listens. shakes his head and keeps on moving despite the possible glances he would be expecting from robert, trying to shake off the feeling that something is following them. ]

[ follows along, marching after the other prince like he's done for the past few weeks. yawns & rubs at his eyes with his palm heels occasionally. only blinks & raises an eyebrow when riku pauses; though blind to the current paranoia that seems to have gripped riku, he's had his fair share of such moments in the weeks before. allows it without a snide or sarcastic comment, entirely pacified by the notion of food & shelter in the coming night. ]

[ it is only after a few minutes that he stops again, though this time with good reason: there is rustling nearby. quite the loud rustling, really, along with some soft noises that sounds suspiciously like an animal of some sort. a large one.

nonetheless he stops yet again and stares into the forest, a hand on the hilt of his sword, ready to strike if anything should come. ]
