[ the weeks seemed to drag by so slowly for him whilst robert were away, having little-to-no interest in the happenings around him throughout the duration of the other boy's leave. more often than not he would be seated by his window, gaze locked on the path that robert would surely return on. it was there that he stayed for most of his days, leaving it only to eat, bathe, or when his mother summoned him. regardless he would put on a smile for those around him, as if nothing was amiss and would say that his brother would surely return soon, that he would be gone for only a short while.

that short while turned into weeks. months. far longer than robert had ever been gone before. on his bad days he wondered if his brother had grown tired of his position (of their situation) and thus would not return for good, but those thoughts were always shadowed by the hope and faith he had in his prince. surely the day of his return would come.

opens his eyes slowly when the sound of music reaches his ears again, lifting his gaze back up towards the crowd of dancing people before him. after some time of simply gazing he sits up straighter in his chair, the one that is forever to his mother's right. does not look at her as she speaks to someone, his curiosity nonexistent. instead he raises his glass and slips at the liquid inside, going back to his silent thinking (of robert, of other things that had been on his mind for quite some while) as a somewhat glazed look overcomes his features once more. ]

Fencing would be a good example. As would any other sword sport.

[ uses his unused hand to stifle his light laughter, amused. ]

I am not surprised by this, though I am afraid that I have never participated in such things.

Due to a lack of interest, or a lack of permission?

... both. More of the former than the latter, however. [ closes his eyes, leaning his temple lightly onto the side of her arm. ] But I mostly enjoy simply observing Robert as he practices.

[ reaches up with her free hand to give the one around her arm a gentle pat, her smirk taking on a softer edge. ]

He is quite talented. Sword practice is the only time he appears to be entirely focused, I believe.

[ speaks his words lowly, a little thoughtfully. ]

Yes. He always does his very best.

[ tilts her head some at the princess at the change in volume, an eyebrow going up. straightens a touch to give the quiet hallway they're moving through a quick scan before glancing back at him. ]

You are safe to speak your mind here, Annabelle.

[ shakes his head a bit, looking up at her. even if it's a little sad, his smile is still genuine. ]

It is the same things you have heard before. Nothing new, just the same thoughts I have had since Robert has been away.

[ sympathy flickers across her face briefly, though she's quick to hide it with a toss of her head. ]

Ah, those. I, myself, have been taking these past few months as an extended holiday of sort. Peaceful days lacking words such as-- [ pitches her voice lower, speaking in mockery of robert's typical tone. ] -- you insolent woman! And the like.

[ chuckles at that, shaking his head fondly. ]

I wish I could have the same sentiments.

Then take joy in my own. I'd be glad to share it with you.

That is quite alright, but I thank you kindly for the offer.

[ gives him a small nudge. ]

Oh, don't be such a killjoy, Annabelle. There's more than enough to go around.

[ lightly nudges her back. ]

I will be sure to inform my brother of this on his return.

[ sniffs. ]

And do you expect me to quiver in fear by this threat? Robert knowing of my intentions and inner thoughts is not a new development.

Oh, it was not a threat. Merely a statement that had sprung into my mind that I had felt an extreme urge to share.

Is that right? Then I thank you for the advance warning.

[ dips his head down an inch. ]

It was the least I could do.

Forgive me if I seem a little sparse during the days immediately following Robert's return.

As a bodyguard who is supposed to keep watch of me constantly, that is a major illegal move.

No need to worry about that little detail. I presume I will be relieved of my duties when your brother returns.

[ smiles warmly, lifting a hand to touch the side of her face. ]

If that is what you wish.

[ turns her face in time to blow at annabelle's hand playfully. ]

My wishes hold no weight in Robert's decision-making. Only yours and his.

[ shakes his head gently, lifting the hand further to tap her nose, as if to reprimand her. ]

The wishes of those I care for hold much weight to me, Alicia. That matters the most, does it not?

Mm. [ a flash of a quick, genuine smile before she shakes her head. ]

Then allow me to share a secret with you. Whether I am relieved of my duties officially or not, I will always be near.
