[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

The holiday specials?

Yep! [ sits up fully again, counting off on his fingers. ] Birthday specials, Halloween specials, Thanksgiving specials... and the big Christmas one!

[ leans his chin against a palm. ]

Must be a popular series with all those extras.

When you have amazing characters like us? You'd better believe it. [ stands from his spot, wandering over to the oven to fiddle with things again. ] Airs every Tuesday and Thursday from eight pm to nine.

[ whistles in appreciation. ]

Huh. Maybe I should go acting full-time then.

My mom could probably get you a job.

I try not to take advantage of my friends' connections.

Then think of it as networking. You offer your services to her and she'll do the same. It's a win-win situation!

[ hums. ]

If she has any use for an entry-level architect, then sure.

[ turns up the heat on the stove, getting back to the vegetables that are warmed up enough by now. ]

Or maybe she'll use you in one of her shoots. I hear they're always looking for part-time male models. I've done it a few times, too.

[ waves that off. ]

I'd make a better movie extra.

[ lifts the spatula he's holding, pointing it at nick. ]

Guy in the background that sells bagels. Gotcha.

We all have to start somewhere.

[ lets out a little laugh, turning back to the stove while his lips twitch up into a (shy?) smile. he's silent after that, concentrating on bustling about the kitchen to finish everything up. fifteen minutes later, he's done and ready to set the food out on the counter, placing everything in a neat line.

lets out a relieved (and somewhat satisfied) sigh when he doesn't see anything amiss. reaches for the plates, holding one out to nick to take. ]

Dinner is served.

[ takes the plate & circles around to stare at the food for a moment. then starts going left to right, adding a little more than he'd usually take on account of knowing there won't be any left for seconds once hurricane lyssa comes through. ]

Is all of this self-taught?

[ shakes his head, following nick down the pile-o-foods. ]

No, I'm not that talented. [ puts a big glob of vegetable on his plate, moving to the next dish. ] When I was younger I used to bother the chefs and ask them to teach me how to cook. When they weren't around in the middle of the night, I'd practice.

[ finally moves onto the chicken at the end, grabbing two medium-sized pieces. ]

Were you looking to impress someone?

My future husband or wife!

[ fetches the utensils for both of them, handing lyssa a fork & knife. ]

What age was this?

[ takes the utensils, thinking on the question. a long pause later: ]

Seven, maybe?

I was out in the playgrounds at that age.

[ winks, moving on over to the table. ]

So was I, but I thought about my future at a young age. [ takes a seat and sets his plate down. ] When you have parents that have been together since they were kids, you can't help but wonder, you know?

I guess. [ settles down in the seat across from lyssa. ] Still, the future usually isn't what you think about as a kid.

[ picks up his fork, nomming a piece of chicken. ]

True, but it's always good to dream and question things, anyway, especially at that age. I was a really curious kid to begin with, so it was nothing new to my parents.

[ while he tries some of the vegetables & ... blinks. putting the current topic on hold as he stops to comment: ]

This is pretty good.
