[ four weeks. that's how long he's known her, only it wasn't quite a two-way street just yet. in fact, he hadn't even been able to work up the courage to talk to her in the month that he's "known" the girl. instead he made it a habit to sit on his ~~stupid~~ bench that she always passed by when going to and from classes, unwilling to miss a chance to see her whenever possible. (not that the bench he claimed was his in the first place, but he'd like to think otherwise. nobody else sat there! so it was okay to say it was his, right...? ... no. probably not. he'll just say that he's borrowing it. sorry, other people who sit there when he's not around. he didn't mean to be so stingy.)

today is no exception, knowing that the ~~rare human-bird species~~ ~~beautiful bird-lady that's so lovely~~ ~~what's her name? he needs to know--~~ girl would be coming around in the next hour or so. (class was let out early, so it's okay to be early too. he didn't just sit there for her, after all! ~~maybe.~~) so he sets up camp at his usual place, beaming when he realizes that there are some birds gathered around the area. (there are bread crumbs on the ground! someone must have been feeding them. this is good, he likes when the birds feel welcome!) so today is a two-for-one deal, he thinks, placing his messenger bag on the bench before pulling out his (rather tattered-looking) moleskine sketchbook and turning to a new page.

feels elated when even more birds come around to peck at the ground, carefully reaching into his bag to grab some of the bird food he carries around with him for times like these. (here you go, my friends! is this to your tastes? it's okay, i won't hurt you. see, i'll toss it closer to you than me!) his smile widens when the birds seem content enough to stay around him, slowly grabbing a pencil to begin his work and wait for his mystery bird-girl. ]

[ --he's going to do it. yes, he's going to do it! thinks he has the right words on the tip of his tongue, turning to (semi-)confidently look her way (again) before blubbering out: ]

B-BIRDS!

[ startles a bit at the sudden exclamation (she's not the only one as the seagull also squawks in surprise), glancing over at the boy on the bench with her.

well, what he said wasn't false... yes, they are birds. so many different birds. kind of. different types of pigeons & robins & such. more than usual though, but she's fairly certain it's because of all the food littered around. who's making such a-- blinks. oh.

... just nods in agreement. ]

A lot of birds.

[ slowly... losing his confidence again at this slip-up. (she doesn't seem too interested. that was lame! how could you embarrass yourself like that? no, it's okay, you can fix this. tell her cool things about the birds!) and thus, while his face flares up again: ]

D-Did you know that pigeons use their beaks like straws when they drink water? [ points to one of the robins closest to the girl's feet. ] A-And only male robins sing!

[ stares down at the robins in new interest, trying to figure out which are the girls & which are boys-- ]

The females can't sing? [ at all? ]

W-Well, it depends on the type of robin... or so I've read. Um. But the European Robin sings in the winter! Both male and females! Males usually do it to attract mates, though... oh, but the American Robin has a unique singing voice! They even sing differently depending on which region they're in, and their styles change throughout the day. [ beams down at one of the birds when it turns his way and tilts its head. tosses down more feeder to it. ] Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot about the Black Robin since it's an endangered species. Did you know that they're only located at the Chatham Islands in New Zealand?

[ she didn't know any of that. it's kind of interesting even when the seagull by her feet could really stand to go away. (of course it doesn't, merely kaa kaa in its attempt to sit on her lyssa-shoes.

... gives it a bit of a nudge away. ]

Where's Chatham Islands?

[ fiddles a bit with the bird feeder on his lap. ]

Christchurch. It sits on the Chatham Rise... [ awkward pause. turns to look at her again, only his eyes go down to the very persistent seagull instead. ] Um. The birds seem to like you. [ a lot. ] Do you own any?

[ nudges. nudges. nudges it away shoo, shoo!

... seagull stops trying to sit on her, but seems to be giving her a betrayed stink eye. ]

Nope. [ because all the birds in the world are her pets. or so it feels like sometimes... ] You?

[ (poor seagull, it really likes her... but she seems uncomfortable. should i push it away? or-- oh, it stopped. she is really good with them!)

... anyway: ]

Yes, I have a few. I even have a chicken, too! [ flips to a page in his sketchbook, showing her the doodles of a hen on the page. ] Her name is Henrietta. She's pretty plump, but it just means that she's happy and healthy.

[ for some reason, she feels a little torn on the chicken. & henrietta... first lyssa with catberta & now this boy with henrietta. is this a boy-thing...? ]

Chickens don't get obese? [ isn't every animal capable of that? speaking of that, she needs to be careful too before she gets too lumpy on the side. thank you for the reminder! (sort of.) ]

They can get obese if you don't give them the proper nutrients, but she gets her exercise, too, so she shouldn't be that fat... [ looks down at the sketchbook again. ] I think she's stressed, though, since I had to move and take her along with me. But my grandparents have a big backyard, so it's not too much trouble.

[ (oh, right! this is a good opportunity to ask more about herself! okay, don't mess this up either.)

mentally nods to himself. forgoes blabbing anymore on his own life, too excited to know about her. ]

Do you live around here? Or stay at the dorms?

[ is nodding along at his explanations (ramble), wondering if proper nutrients & simple exercise can keep the flab away... there's also that whole "moving" thing too 'cause she moved recently. is that why she feels like she needs to be a bit more careful lately--

blinks at his question. & then slowly nods. (wait, that doesn't answer his question, does it?) ]

At the dorms. [ she has to, since she's from out of state. ] It's not bad.

[ feels a little surprised by this, despite knowing he should think otherwise. (she comes by here so often, after all...) but still, his curiosity is piqued again. ]

Are you not from around here?

[ oh yeah, she didn't actually say that part outloud, huh... she doesn't have such problems with lyssa so it takes her a while to remember that not everything makes out into the real world--

cuts that thought off & shakes her head. ]

From out of state.

[ instantly feels bad for just watching her for so long instead of just approaching her, even if he knows that he wasn't even aware of any of this in the first place. (maybe she's having a hard time... but she looks okay, so it should be fine!)

... no, he still feels bad. decides to question, just in case. ]

Have you been adjusting well? Do you need any help...?

[ blinks at the offer, surprised. (though not in a bad way, even if it did feel like it came out of the blue.) ]

. . . It's okay. It's not too hard. [ especially since the school that she was in before had a lot more bullies & angry, rabid girls. not to mention, she has lyssa with her. ] I moved with a friend.

Oh... that good, then. [ (right, of course she would. you didn't think these things through very well, did you?) looks at his lap again, then blinks when the second part pings him. ] Are you dorming with her?

Him. [ then shakes her head again. ] Not same room, but we're in the same building.

[ (him? him!? --oh, but she said he was a friend, so that's okay, right? ... right?)

shakes his head a little to rid himself of those thoughts. still feels uneasy, just deciding to try and veer away from that for now. ]

Are you two majoring in the same thing?

[ pauses... & this is the third time that she's shaking her head, isn't it? kind of awkward. sorry, random stranger-boy! (wait, he is a stranger, huh? funny how his questions feel like they should be pointed at someone more familiar. --oh well.) ]

Not really. [ they're both art-related, see? but she's more of the 'studying it' type while lyssa is the actual 'make art' type. ]

[ when he's not given much more he suddenly realizes what he's done, making him stop himself instantly from asking another question. yet again his face turns red, more from embarrassment than anything else this time around. this is her, after all, it's obvious she wouldn't want to give too much information to someone like him.

(stupid stupid stupid--) flounders a bit, raising his hands up in a defeated manner. ]

Ah! Sorry, I'm asking too many questions! I don't mean to pry, honest!

[ blinks a bit at the change of pace, confused. & stays confused for the next handful of seconds until something seems to click (& the seagull lets out a kaa, as if in sync).

oh, she probably did it again, huh? funny how these moments keep popping up... too used to lyssa maybe? ]

It's okay. [ she's not upset. --wait, say that outloud, self: ] I'm not bothered.

[ would smack himself on the forehead for that if he wasn't trying to calm down. decides to just keep his questions to himself for now, feeling like he's blown his chance despite her words. (i shouldn't have expected anything more... maybe i'll just keep admiring from afar.) nods at her words. ]

O-Okay. [ (should i tell her about the past month? that'd be better, but then she might not come around here anymore, or think you're really creepy. that would really suck. she should know, though. grandpa always said it's best to be honest, especially to someone you like. go ahead and tell her, self!) starts off timidly: ] Y-You know... the truth is, I--

[ POPS UP behind the bench before the guy can finish, tilting slightly forward towards amanda's line of sight before raising a hand in greeting. ]

Afternoon! Thought you'd still be around here. Your class was cancelled, wasn't it? [ peers over at who he assumes is amanda's friend, smiling widely at him before glancing at amanda again. ] Who's this?
