[ quietly, just barely audible in volume, starts humming the song from the rainy day by the window, not minding that it's a bit off tune. carefully swings his feet back & forth, trying to not expend too much energy but trying to distract himself from his cold. ]

[ does not open her eyes when she hears his voice, content in silently listening at the moment. after a while she finds herself humming along in the middle of the song with him, only loud enough for him to hear. ]

[ stops his humming when he hears her follow along so that he can hear her voice better. lifts his other hand to cover his mouth in a cough, smiling. ]

[ continues the song with a whispered lyric here & there, coming to a finish when her mind picks up and starts anew with fresh thoughts, new ideas to keep them (him) from focusing on his cold.

barely brushes her lips against his forehead before she slips from her position & stands up. looks at him and then wanders off to the corner of the room, bending over to gather the children's books that the other kids are promptly ignoring, as the other toys seem to capture their attention at the moment. walks back to him quickly, sitting on the ground in front of him as she sets the pile next to her on the floor. holds up a book towards him, tilting her head slightly to see if he approves. ]

[ blinks, almost owlishly, his mind unable to process what she is silently asking for the moment. when he does come around realizing, his lips form a quiet 'o' & extends a hand to accept her offering. smiles when he looks at the title & the cover art. ]

"The Hungry Caterpillar"?

[ nods, holding her hands out gingerly. ]

Would you like me to read it to you?

[ hands it back & nods mutely, already listening attentively over his coughs. ]

[ settles in, tucking her dress underneath her legs neatly. adjusts the book in hand before starting: ]

In the light of the moon, a little egg lay on a leaf. One Sunday morning, the warm sun came up and ah-- out of the egg came a tiny and very hungry caterpillar.

He started to look for some food.

[ shows him the pictures, turning the page to read the rest. ]

On Monday, he ate through one apple... but he was still hungry.

On Tuesday, he ate through two pears... but he was still hungry.

On Wednesday, he ate through three plums... but he was still hungry.

On Thursday, he ate through four strawberries... but he was still hungry.

On Friday, he ate through five oranges... but he was still hungry.

On Saturday, he ate through one piece of chocolate cake, one ice cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon.

That night he had a stomachache.

The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through one nice green leaf, and after that, he felt much better.

Now he wasn't hungry anymore, and now he wasn't a little caterpillar anymore, he was a big fat caterpillar.

He built a small house called a cocoon around himself. He stayed inside for more than two weeks. Then he nibbled a hole in the cocoon, pushed his way out and pop-- he was a beautiful butterfly.

[ shows the last image, blinking slowly before turning it back to herself, closing it shut quietly. ]

The end.

[ had kept to the best of his silences as she read, trying to keep his coughing down to a minimum. when she finishes, he sits there for a moment, running the story once more over in his mind (it was nothing like the books he is required to read by the doctor) & feels a smile spread his cheeks, his expression alone telling the extent of his pleasure. ]

That... that was really good.

[ feels something warm in her chest (and face) when she sees him smile, placing the book on her lap as she ducks her head down slightly, though is unsure as to why. ]

I am glad you enjoyed it.

[ slides down from the seat to crouch, peering at the pile of books. looks up at her with no small amount of excitement. ]

Let's read more.

[ glances at him in the corner of her eye in observation, nodding silently soon after before sitting up straight once more. ]

Do you want to pick-- [ cough. ] --the next one?

[ opens her mouth to reply then slowly closes it, setting aside the book in hand. ]

I... am not sure which one would be to your tastes.

I like all-- um, most books. Just pick one you like.

Alright.

[ shuffles through them, tilting her head at a rather colorful and odd looking one. holds it up. ]

The Cat in the Hat?

[ peers at it & nods. ]

Okay.

[ opens up the book and begins to read it to him, getting only to the fifth page before the door to the office opens & a nurse calls albert's name. turns to look at him and stands automatically, reaching out a hand towards him in silence. ]

[ stiffens when his name is called, already apprehensive as he slowly (needlessly slowly) gets to his feet. hangs his head a tad when he walks toward the nurse, only looking up when he can see the details of her shoes. cringes despite her disarming smile, looking back once before he follows her into Sheryl's office.

sits stiffly in the chair when he enters, trying not to react too much (trying not to blush as much as Sheryl would like) as he mumbles his answers to her questions, is entirely obedient. after getting his temperature checked & seeing the needle in her hand, he doesn't remember much, too caught up in the terror of the pain-to-come. but in the end, he walks out with only a prescription in hand, dazed.

walks quickly back to brianna before the nurse calls her name next, showing her the prescription before stuffing that into his pocket & slipping his hand into hers, squeezing it for strength (for himself; she seemed just fine). ]

[ & she is just fine, even if she continued to stand there and stare at the door, waiting for albert to return. when he comes around and takes her hand she simply looks down at the connection, squeezing back (for him) before gently removing herself to obediently follow through with her task at hand.

everything goes the same as it usually does; her usual politeness, the smooth & swift procedure, the small headpat she gets for being a good girl & the small, almost shy smile she gives sheryl at the end of their visit. it's the same as always.

it does not take her very long to step outside once again, closing the door behind herself quietly as she approaches albert, reaching a hand out for him to take as she nods once in her natural approval of her appointment. ]

[ gladly takes her hand, scrambling up onto his feet despite the ensuing dizziness from the action. looks to her, as if asking for permission, before he slowly leads them out of the clinic. ]
