[ the weeks seemed to drag by so slowly for him whilst robert were away, having little-to-no interest in the happenings around him throughout the duration of the other boy's leave. more often than not he would be seated by his window, gaze locked on the path that robert would surely return on. it was there that he stayed for most of his days, leaving it only to eat, bathe, or when his mother summoned him. regardless he would put on a smile for those around him, as if nothing was amiss and would say that his brother would surely return soon, that he would be gone for only a short while.

that short while turned into weeks. months. far longer than robert had ever been gone before. on his bad days he wondered if his brother had grown tired of his position (of their situation) and thus would not return for good, but those thoughts were always shadowed by the hope and faith he had in his prince. surely the day of his return would come.

opens his eyes slowly when the sound of music reaches his ears again, lifting his gaze back up towards the crowd of dancing people before him. after some time of simply gazing he sits up straighter in his chair, the one that is forever to his mother's right. does not look at her as she speaks to someone, his curiosity nonexistent. instead he raises his glass and slips at the liquid inside, going back to his silent thinking (of robert, of other things that had been on his mind for quite some while) as a somewhat glazed look overcomes his features once more. ]

A long and lonely night await me, I suppose. Full of tears and alcohol.

Oh no, I will not let you get away that easily.

Are you offering your night to me, dearest princess? [ gasps for show. ] But think of the rumours.

[ uses the hand not connected to hers to press the tips of his fingers against his mouth. ]

You are right... we should try to be more discrete.

Ah, but fear not. I do know a few shortcuts from the kitchen. Or three.

[ chuckles briefly. ]

As do I, though I believe I have Robert to thank for that knowledge.

Hmm... I do wonder sometimes.

[ jerks her head haughtily. ]

You're wise to doubt him in this matter.

Mm. Though it does depend on if it is only the kitchen we are speaking about. [ looks downward in thought, a softer smile coming into view. ] I believe Robert has discovered many ways around the palace that no one else had ever thought of before. He has spent most of his life attempting to convince me to come with him.

[ quirks a smaller, gentler smile at those words. a step, two steps, three steps -- one more twirl & the song is done. backs up a tad to bow, bending at the waist. the movement a little lower than usual, & longer. that done, she straightens & offers her hand again so that she can lead them off the dance floor. ]

And? How successful was he in his attempts at persuasion?

[ does his own share of traditional gestures, taking the hand once more to allow her to guide them. ]

I am afraid to say that his success was very limited, much to his great displeasure.

[ tugs them off the dance floor toward a quieter edge of the party, an eyebrow going up. ]

And my own success rate? What would you predict it to be?

[ shifts his hand to instead lightly wrap his arm around her forearm, resting a hand there comfortably. ]

I cannot say, for you have yet to tread into dangerous waters.

Yet being key. Come now, as my dearest patron, you should have some idea. A guess will suffice.

It will be of less success than Robert's attempts, for he would be most jealous if you bested him whilst he were away.

But would that jealousy not be a point of amusement for us both? Will you not play along with my rebellious ploy for that reason?

Just as I will remain chaste until I wed, so too will I secure some semblance of maintaining the prince's pride.

Oh, but my liege's pride is of grand proportions already. Is it not our duty to maintain it at a suitable size?

I believe that to be your job, unfortunately.

[ leans against the wall when they reach it with a small sniff. ]

That is true no longer, princess. My job has moved onto ensuring your safety, no?

[ keeps himself attached to her as his gaze wanders. ]

Then it shall be part-time work. I am sure there will be no qualms to be had in that decision.

[ allows her own gaze to observe the remaining dancers with no real interest as she tsks. ]

Ah ah, princess. You know very well that both are full-time work. To protect a darling princess, or to pain myself for the sake of an insolent liege? Why, that's no choice at all.

[ sticks his nose up a little bit in the air. ]

Yes, it must be very difficult for you in choosing.

[ raises a brow briefly, then makes a considering noise. ]

Difficult enough that I should seek the council of a psychic, do you think?
