[ after albert and brianna declared their plans to go out on a date for the rest of the evening, she took it upon herself to personally watch lyssa until they returned home, despite her former plans with her boyfriend. it's with that change (and realization of what she did at the very last moment) that she calls up caleb to tell him the news, sounding disappointed until she ~~gleefully~~ casually suggested that he come over to help. after some convincing that yes, albert won't be here and yes, she'll wait for him by the door, is done and over with, she happily skips down the stairs after telling lyssa's personal ~~ninja~~ butler that she'll be back shortly.

plops down on the second to last step of the stairs while happily swaying and humming to herself, her eyes planted on the doorway to wait for caleb to enter. ]

[ also speaks quietly, if only because she's feeling shy. ]

< Forever, I'm hoping... >

[ but he hears it, of course. closes his eyes, breathing evening out as he relaxes against her warmth. keeps his voice at a quieter murmur as not to disrupt the heartbeat that he's listening to. ]

< We can try. Try really hard, to get as close to that as we can get. >

< Then I guess we'd better quickly find a house with a white picket fence. Maybe a dog, two or three ki-- >

[ stops, if only because she realizes he will not understand that she's joking. and thus: ]

< Um. I'm only joking, by the way. It's an American joke, sort of. >

[ cracks open an eye sleepily, squinting a bit in confusion anyway. ]

< Sort of. . . ? So a house with white fence can mean 'forever' to Americans? >

< Sort of... > [ reaches for one of his hands, playing with it a little as she explains. ] < It's called the American Dream, where people in America have this notion that there's one dream all Americans are striving for. People joke that a white fence, two or three kids, and a dog make up what all Americans dream to have. That'll lead to Happily Ever After, apparently. It's much deeper than that, of course, but it's a common and socially accepted joke here. >

[ listens quietly & nods, shutting his eye again. grins into her hair. ]

< I have the dog part covered! We're doing pretty good? >

[ feels that grin, unable to keep herself from laughing (happily). ]

< It's like we're half-way there already! >

Ja! < We are making good progress! Hilda would be proud. >

[ gives a small nod, careful to not bump his face away in the process. pauses, however, when a thought strikes her. fiddles with his hand again, starts out slowly. ]

< If... if we do stay together forever, and um. Some things change maybe. Do you want to stay here or go back to Germany...? >

[ cracks open his real eye again, fighting past the drowsiness in response to his tendency to prioritize others (& nathania in specific). ]

< I will stay where Nathan-ee-ah wants to stay. >

[ feels like this is important enough to twist in a way where she can look him in the eye. ]

< But what do you want? You must have a preference. I know you miss Germany, but I know you like our team, too. >

[ looks unusually conflicted, stiffening a bit. ]

< It is wrong to be selfish, Nathan-ee-ah. I will stay with you, our team, and where SAVE needs me most. >

< There's nothing wrong with being selfish, if it's done in moderation. > [ reaches up, stroking his face with a hand. ] < Nobody would blame you if you wanted to go. Not here. We'll always be family regardless, I promise you. >

[ leans into the touch while considering this for a moment. ]

< Yes, moderation is good. I was taught that. But it won't affect just me, yes? I was also taught to think about the whole. . . >

< That's true, but you can't always please everyone. > [ gently tugs his head down, kissing his jawline once. ] < SAVE is a huge company. Aaron and Haru have worked as a two-man team before, long before you or I joined them. >

. . . !! [ looks a bit distressed. ]

< I- I know what I want! I want to be more than an extra and be more useful!! >

[ ... ]

< That's not what I meant... >

[ slowly shifts so she's facing caleb fully, touching his cheeks with her fingertips. ]

< I just meant that you wouldn't have to worry even if we decided to leave. You're valuable and more useful than you give yourself credit for, but... like you said before, it's work. They'll be able to function whether we're there or not. >

[ doesn't look entirely comfortable with the idea, but nods anyway. ]

< Okay. If Nathan-ee-ah says so. I will think about it. . . >

[ kisses the side of his mouth. ]

< It won't be for a while, so take your time. Right now, everything is okay. > [ shifts, pressing her forehead into the crook of his neck. ] < I like this. >

[ closes his eyes & lets out a content sigh, nuzzling the top of her head again. then gives her head a kiss, murmuring against her scalp: ]

< Me too. I think this is one of my favourite things to do! >

[ snickers, finding that confession to be cute. & just for fun: ]

< Oh yeah? And what are your other favorite things to do? >

< Being helpful! SAVE stuff. . . and then I like to learn, read, and listen to classical music. >

< Did you learn most of what you know from Hilda? >
