[ of course, as it turns out, the one thing that she's forgotten to mention to lyssa was the fact that she didn't really have a convenient method of transportation. all she'd asked for the location & time, thinking that would have been enough. of course it hadn't been.

... oh well.

hooking her small messenger bag-slash-purse on her shoulder, she bids her dad goodbye after reassuring him that she'll be back by ten (yes, yes, don't worry, just the mall--). & promptly feels glad that she left two hours before the time she's supposed to meet lyssa 'cause she just missed the bus & the next one won't be arriving for another half-hour. she settles down, pews & waits. long story short (after she subtracts the bus ride & all the weird things her hair is doing in the humidity), she manages to get to the mall in once piece: none of her organs are missing, her dress isn't ripped up, & no one had shoved her head down a toilet. day's pretty good so far (where's wood to knock on when she needed some?). 'cept the fact that she's probably a few minutes late, but--

... oh well.

she'll apologize to lyssa as soon as she can find him. ]

[ rests her elbow on the edge of a knee, chin propped up in the palm of a hand. ]

So you're dumping him then? Must be a nice relationship, having the date all planned out and everything.

[ leans back against the door, hands slipping into the pockets of his pants to hide the slight twitch of guilt. ]

Can't really call this a relationship. [ short pause. ] He's also free to leave whenever he wants.

[ raises an eyebrow slowly, but decides to press on while waiting for the teen in the other room to finish his business. ]

And if he happens to get attached to you? What then?

[ snorts out a small huff of laughter. ]

Don't worry. He's not the type.

[ voice slightly hardens, if only to get her point across. ]

He's human. You can't be completely sure, especially when--

[ immediately stops the conversation when the bedroom door slowly opens, lips twitching up into a polite smile. after the boy steps out: ]

Well hello again.

[ lightly shuts the door behind himself, flashing her a bright smile. ]

Good evening! You look as lovely as usual.

[ huffs out in amusement. ]

And you're still quite the charmer, as always.

[ walks over towards her, though only so he can pick up his stuff. ]

I only speak the truth, miss. [ inclines his head slightly. ] If you'll excuse me.

[ looks over his shoulder at nick with a flash of a smile before he exits the apartment without another word. ]

[ waits until lyssa's completely gone. walking up to the door, he locks it & turns back around toward robin with a small quirk of the lips. in complete deadpan: ]

Yes, with such meaningful interactions, you're a real expert on him. [ shakes his head. ] Some people just know what they want early on, sis.

Says the man who has never raised a child of his age before. [ sighs out loudly, running a hand through her hair. softer this time: ] I just wish you would've found a better way to cope.

[ eyes go briefly to the floor, then flicks back up. just as quietly: ]

I'm working on it. And this won't be forever. [ i can promise that. ]

[ massages her temple a little for a minute. there's another another sigh before she finally smiles something softer (i'm not mad). after the moment passes, her voice takes on a more playful tone. ]

So how was your day before I came over and ruined it?

As if. [ he doesn't specify what those two words are in response to, but given the context, he's certain that it's pretty clear. ] But it wasn't too bad though. I got a rough draft done.

[ gestures to alice. ] Do I have time for a shower before she wakes up?

[ looks over at her daughter again. smile is softer (loving) despite her words. ]

If she wakes up. The little brat's stomach is full, but I'm sure she'll want to at least say hello and use your lap as a pillow.

That can be arranged. And maybe I can bribe her awake with some cheesecake. [ then he's walking back into his room to quickly grab a change of clothes & a fresh towel. coming back outside, he casts alice a fond look before moving toward the bathroom. ]

Give me ten minutes.

Take your time.

[ leans back into the couch, happily making a show of getting comfortable. ]

[ taking that to be rhetorical, he wanders into the bathroom, closing the door behind him quietly. setting the clothes on the sink, he takes a moment to stretch a little, rolling his shoulders & flexing his hands. this is one of those so-so days, he decides on the spot. but a shower & some time spent with his niece would push it up to make the day indefinitely better.

that thought propels him to strip & step in & out of the shower within the ten minutes that he's promised his sister. it's a shower meant to clean him, not comfort him, so he barely remembers the process. (he feels cleaner now & that's all that matters.) he comes out of the bathroom while still towelling off his hair. sliding the towel onto his neck, he grips the ends of it with his hands. glances at (the still sleeping) alice. ]

Should I just give you the cheesecake to go?

No, she was the one who demanded we come over. [ sits up fully from her previous lounging position, placing a hand on alice's shoulder to gently shake her. ] Sweetheart, it's time to wake up. Uncle Nick is here.

[ and she does wake, only it's a very, very slow process; cracks her eyes open and blinks them slowly, looking around a little at her surroundings. sits up with robin's help, rubbing at her eyes to try and get rid of how blurry everything looks.

rubs. rubs some more. ]

... ?

[ drowsily looks up at her mom and then over at nick. there's a long pause before she begins to nod off again, head bobbing slightly as she slowly tips over. ]

[ raises an eyebrow down at her, quirking another smile. tilts to try and look at her properly, bringing a hand up to the young girl's face. and then she lightly flicks her forehead. ]

[ makes a whining noise and rubs at her face again, but it wakes her up enough to finally peel her eyes open a fraction and take another look around again. ]

[ eyes land on nick and stays there finally. after one more rub at her forehead, speaks sleepily (and a little shyly): ]

Hi...

[ can't help the smile that stretches his lips. walks on over to ruffle her hair gently. ]

Hey, doodlebug. You awake enough for cheesecake?
