[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

[ reaches out a hand towards his. ]

That's a deal I can definitely make!

[ takes his hand loosely & shakes. ]

Do we need to put it in writing?

That is an excellent idea! [ removes his hand to circle on over to his bag, rummaging around in it. pulls out a pencil and his sketchbook before he turns it to a fresh page, wandering to the table to take a seat and wave nick on over. starts scribbling in stylized handwriting: ] I, Lyssa, promise to relinquish a sesame seed bagel to Nick. And I, Nick, promise to let Lyssa have all the other delicious bagels...

[ watches the contract go down, huffing out quiet laughter. ]

'--that Lyssa brings to Nick's housewarming party.' Be specific.

[ blinks over at him. ]

Oh, right. [ erases the period he put there, adding on what nick said to the end of it. after doodling cartoon versions of them he beams and holds it up. ] Finished!

[ pretends to scrutinize it & the nods. ]

So where do I sign?

[ points to the cartoon-~~moo~~nick, handing over the pencil. ]

Right next to this handsome fellow.

What an honour. [ takes the pencil & signs. hands the pencil back. ] Your turn.

[ signs next to his cartoon-self, making a grand show of it. nods down at the paper. ]

It is complete. [ turns to nick. ] Do you want to keep it, or should I?

[ stares down at it for a moment, then shrugs. ]

It comes into effect when I move so I'll keep it.

[ holds the contract up, winking once. ]

As you wish, sir.

[ shakes his head & takes it. ]

Make a note to yourself about this. [ because he might forget. ]

[ nods, quickly scribbling a note in his sketchbook before shutting it. props his elbows onto the table, placing his chin into his palms. ]

So, how does it feel to be bound to me for at least another three or four years?

[ shrugs while staring down at the paper, wondering where he could put it. ]

Not as stifling as I'd feared.

[ sinks down a little in his seat at nick's words, arms and chin now flat against the table. ]

Drats. I would have made such a good antagonist, too...

[ glances over at the oven & then back at lyssa. ]

Nah. Maybe a sidekick.

[ looks even sadder at the prospect of not being a main character. ]

A sidekick? That's it?

[ reaches over to give him a flick. ]

Sidekicks can become more popular than the protagonists.

[ as usual he makes a face at the flick, even if he's used to it by now. after he recovers: ]

What does that make you, then?

[ gives the table a tap as he thinks. ]

A reoccurring character?

[ swings his legs around a bit underneath the table, fiddling around with his pencil. ]

The Bagel Man.

[ stares for a moment. then shakes his head. ]

Appears just to sell bagels?

And to give the sidekick a hug!

Hmm. [ purposeful pause. ] Only when plot allows.
