[ of course, as it turns out, the one thing that she's forgotten to mention to lyssa was the fact that she didn't really have a convenient method of transportation. all she'd asked for the location & time, thinking that would have been enough. of course it hadn't been.

... oh well.

hooking her small messenger bag-slash-purse on her shoulder, she bids her dad goodbye after reassuring him that she'll be back by ten (yes, yes, don't worry, just the mall--). & promptly feels glad that she left two hours before the time she's supposed to meet lyssa 'cause she just missed the bus & the next one won't be arriving for another half-hour. she settles down, pews & waits. long story short (after she subtracts the bus ride & all the weird things her hair is doing in the humidity), she manages to get to the mall in once piece: none of her organs are missing, her dress isn't ripped up, & no one had shoved her head down a toilet. day's pretty good so far (where's wood to knock on when she needed some?). 'cept the fact that she's probably a few minutes late, but--

... oh well.

she'll apologize to lyssa as soon as she can find him. ]

[ is blissfully unaware of her confusion, as usual. guides them around while on the lookout for any places that would look prom-dress worthy, speaking to her idly. ]

Are there any places you wanted to go into? We could get lunch a little later, too.

[ ... oh! right, there's this new store (or one that's closing, she can't really remember) that's-- ]

--having a sale. Ponies. [ 50% off!! there might be some that she doesn't have already, so maybe-- ] We can go after we get your stuff. [ 'cause it'll probably take her a while to pick through everything. ]

You sure love your ponies, don't you... [ briefly recalls making a 'my little pony' dress for her for her birthday a year back, but-- ] That sounds fine by me, sure.

[ this is why shopping with lyssa is something she wouldn't wiggle away from 'cause he's incredibly fair. then again, lyssa made the pony dress & some plushies, so maybe she's finally converting him into the religion that is pony love? she hopes so, but he's been pretty resilient so far so it's not a good idea to get her hopes up, maybe. but still, store!

... but before they could get to that point, they had to-- ]

--get going? What is our first destination?

[ he's not entirely unaware of her monologuing this time, quite used to it by now. is almost ready to try and piece together what she was saying in her head, but the question deters him away from that. ]

Hm... some place with lots of dresses.

[ ... lyssa doesn't crossdress, as far as she knows.

so why are they going to a place with a lot of dresses?

places with dresses has suits sometimes too. but lyssa just said that he had his suit for weeks. did he just change his mind or something? or--! ]

New date? [ that has her measurements that didn't want to come shopping for her own dress? how irresponsible, what if it doesn't actually fit because they suddenly lose or gain weight, or if the color clashes & it offends lyssa on the level of an artist? but, well, if that's lyssa's choice, she shouldn't judge or anything 'cause judging is bad. some girls like being surprised too.

she also thought that they were going together, but maybe that plan's changed too... could she still ask him to be a wall between the army of swirlie girls and her--? friends did that for each other-- ] --right?

[ ... hmm. yes, lyssa's nice, so he'll definitely say yes. there's no problem with that. in that case! ] We could try Banana.

[ takes a short glance at her, tilting his head slightly when he thinks he catches on to her inner monologue. to question that or not ... naw, decides to answer the first for now. ]

Banana Republic has some decently designed dresses, but the Monogram series isn't particularly made for something as elegant and expressive as prom gowns are concerned. They mostly carry little black dresses and classic chic, so I don't think that would be an appropriate store to shop at for something as big as prom. [ glances around at the stores some more. & then: ] And no, I'm still taking you. You're my date, and I have to keep my eye on those around you. Besides, there's nobody else in the world I'd rather go with.

[ listens attentively, nodding at regular intervals to show that she's paying attention. but the end makes her pause, blink. ]

Huh? --Oh. [ ... but then. why? ] Then we don't need to go shopping [ for dresses. ]. I have mine picked out. [ for weeks over here too.

mostly because the choice was either a or b & a had less crinkles... ]

[ stops them in their tracks, giving her that expression (without entirely realizing it). ]

Huh? But... but that's the whole point of us going out like this together...

[ ... that face. oh, what did she do. what could she do? oh wait-- ]

Um, you can take a look at it later? [ the crinkles probably haven't been worked out properly yet. ] It was my mom's, so maybe you-- [ might want to see it on principle, right? ] Yeah.

[ um... ] We can still do other things here. . . still look at dresses? [ even if she won't (& can't, really) buy them. ]

[ peers at her face, looking hopeful. ]

So you'll try on anything I pick out?

[ --is overlooking most of her words, but he's too busy honing on on the more "important" parts. at least for now, anyway. ]

Yes, I can try them on. [ but she just... can't buy them. her dad would cry & then she'd have to relent and give him cheeseburgers to soothe him. that's so bad for his health, why won't he quit this addiction...? ]

Great! [ resumes their walk, a little skip in his steps. ] Don't worry, you don't have to buy them. I just want to see them on you!

[ follows along, still a bit confused. ]

I think they make simulating programs for things like that. . .

But those programs don't hold the full essence of a real human being! [ winks over at her. ] They aren't you, either, so I take that into account, too.

[ looks down at self briefly. ]

You have my measurements? I didn't gain over the week.

[ uses his free hand to push at her hair a little. ]

But the simulation wouldn't have your hair. That's a key point, you know!

[ the hair seems to bounce. ]

Oh, right. . . [ unless there was an option where they could add an afro to the simulation's head. or a fat cat. ]

An afro wouldn't work, but maybe-- [ comes to a halt when they almost pass by a store that has gowns on display. ] Oh, awesome! We're in luck! C'mon, let's find you something pretty to wear.

[ leads them in before she has any say in it, removing his arm from around her shoulders to instead start browsing the selection. ]

[ grips the strap of her bag again with both hands, standing a bit awkwardly in the middle of all these high-priced, sparkly pieces of cloth.

... begins her slow migration to the back where the sales definitely must be. ]

[ while he's careful in selecting a few dresses, testing out the poofy-modesty level of them. there are too many sparkles and sequins for his taste (really, his mom would be making that face at them that only he and his dad could properly recognize) so he only comes out of the war zone with three.

makes a beeline to his friend over in the sales section, holding out the first dress (http://i56.tinypic.com/nbzq12.jpg). ]

I know this one screams 'pretty princess', but I love the color and the design is unique and it would look ah-mazing on you!

[ looks away from where she's mindlessly turning the selections over, eyes crossing a bit. ]

. . . How is that. How do you. [ put that on? ]

[ blinks, looking it over... then laughs. ]

Oh, don't worry, this material in the front is just for decoration. [ flips the dress, pointing to the one zipper on the back. ] Just two quick and easy steps: Unzip, then zip again!

[ takes the dress, mollified. ]

Just this one?

[ takes a few steps back to sit on one of the seats next to the dressing room, placing the two other dresses in his lap. ]
