[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

Fair enough. [ nabs the tray of bread rolls, popping them into the oven. winks over at him. ] I'm not all that hard to please, anyway.

[ that's why it's so hard to get lyssa a present. but he doesn't say that out loud, of course. ]

Hugs, healthy eating, and what else?

[ hums, fiddling with this and that as he lists things off. ]

Helping you draw, my lady, my muse and family... I don't need much, other than a sketchbook and pencil.

[ blinks a bit. an eyebrow goes up. ]

Too early into college for that list to change?

[ leans back on the counter once everything is in place again, facing nick. ]

Well, I obviously need supplies for my classes, but that's out of necessity. Otherwise I'm fine without a ton of stuff. I want to live a minimalist life when I'm out of college. [ looks up at the ceiling, smile widening. ] I'll probably end up just living in a small apartment with my cat and art supplies.

[ & the eyebrow... stays up. looks a bit surprised. ]

Tired of your current lifestyle or just want to try something new?

I suppose I just want to try something new. I'm fine with either, really. [ eyes go back over to nick. ] Do you see yourself somewhere else in the future?

[ shakes his head. ]

A bigger apartment, but that's it. I take things as they come.

Make sure you invite me to your housewarming party, then. I'll bring you a variety of bagels.

[ snorts. ]

They'll go bad before I can eat them all.

Then I will eat most of them for you!

[ a short pause. then deadpan: ]

You're going to eat your own gift?

[ while still smiling that smile of his: ]

Yes.

[ ... why did he even need to ask. ]

Of course.

[ beams, reaching over to pat his shoulder. ]

Don't worry, I'll save you the best ones. Like the ones with raisins in them!

Make that a sesame seed bagel and we'll deal.

[ reaches out a hand towards his. ]

That's a deal I can definitely make!

[ takes his hand loosely & shakes. ]

Do we need to put it in writing?

That is an excellent idea! [ removes his hand to circle on over to his bag, rummaging around in it. pulls out a pencil and his sketchbook before he turns it to a fresh page, wandering to the table to take a seat and wave nick on over. starts scribbling in stylized handwriting: ] I, Lyssa, promise to relinquish a sesame seed bagel to Nick. And I, Nick, promise to let Lyssa have all the other delicious bagels...

[ watches the contract go down, huffing out quiet laughter. ]

'--that Lyssa brings to Nick's housewarming party.' Be specific.

[ blinks over at him. ]

Oh, right. [ erases the period he put there, adding on what nick said to the end of it. after doodling cartoon versions of them he beams and holds it up. ] Finished!

[ pretends to scrutinize it & the nods. ]

So where do I sign?

[ points to the cartoon-~~moo~~nick, handing over the pencil. ]

Right next to this handsome fellow.

What an honour. [ takes the pencil & signs. hands the pencil back. ] Your turn.
