[ exactly three and a half months later alyssa returned from her trip with her parents, feeling refreshed and rather happy in the face of what she considered a new beginning. the change of scenery was needed, as well as the lost (& hopefully only brief) contact between friends gave her more of a reason to keep going on strong; to mend things, to make things right again.

it is now that she returns to the campus, having decided that it was best to move back in with her parents for the time being. thinks she merely missed home too much to properly focus on things that needed to be focused on, knowing that the change was necessary and very much so welcomed (from her dad especially). at the moment she resides under one of the trees a bit further out from the building where her first class was held in, contently reading a book to pass the hours until her next class started. flips through it leisurely, eyes trained to focus on that and nothing more. tucks a strand of now-short hair behind an ear, feeling calm and at peace with the world as a whole. ]

[ longest summer vacation, he thinks, since the year that his cousin moved away in middle school. his memory feels splotchy, even now, splintered between his boss, his dad, tony & the single girl that he dated. and so it's in a daze that he lifts his head from his mindless wanderings, frowning a little when he doesn't quite recognize his surroundings. glances down at his cellphone for no real reason than to simply look at it (a habit) before looking around for any landmarks.

it's in this state of mind that he walks past her from behind. almost doesn't recognize her, in fact, as he shifts his bag from one shoulder to the other when the used books he bought earlier that morning begins to weigh him down. stops in his tracks though when he feels his heart skip & freeze. it makes him approach slowly, one step at a time, until he's partially hidden behind the tree.

... now takes a moment to stare. ]

[ & stares some more, head craned & tilted a tad as he compares the girl's features with the ones ingrained into his mind. ]

[ shoulders off the bag to place down on the grass as silently as possible. his body is still half-hidden when he manages to scrape up enough courage from the pit of his stomach to finally call out to her. ]

. . . Ly-- Alyssa?

[ jumps slightly at the sudden intrusion, immediately turning towards the voice that--for some reason or another--did not register as one she had heard before. ]

...

[ places the book face-down on her lap, not bothering to shut it. gives him a bright smile, almost as if she's excited to see him after being involuntarily dragged away for the summer-- or perhaps as if she had completely forgotten what happened the last time she had seen him. ]

Anthony!

[ shuffles his feet a little as he wonders what he could say. what he should say. doesn't move from his spot behind the tree when he finally decides his most profound answer. ]

Hi.

"Hi"? You're so silly! [ scoots a bit, patting the seat next to her. ] Sit down and stop looming already!

[ doesn't move, though he seems to steady relax. ]

I'm practicing my creeping.

Aw, but you shouldn't practice on me~ That's mean.

If I can creep on f-- you, I can creep on anyone.

[ leans back onto the tree, pouting a bit. ]

Geez~

[ leans forward towards him, looking excited again. ]

Hey, hey! How was your summer? Did you go anywhere? Did you have fun?

[ squashes the lump that immediately rises in his throat, keeping his expression level for the sake of keeping that shine in her eyes steady as long as possible. ]

Summer. . .

[ shakes his head quickly. ]

You first.

[ sits back again, eyes going skyward. ]

I went to Italy! I've never been there before, it's so beautiful. Then we went to Paris at the end of my trip, and oh, Anthony. It was so wonderful. I wish you could've been there with me!

[ perks up again, letting out a surprised "ah!" sound when something hits her. ]

I got you a present! [ reaches into her bag, rummaging around... and then whines. ] Oh phooey, I don't think I have it on me...

[ can't help the small frown that comes to his face then, confusion & curiosity warring with panic. hides his face a little more behind the tree as she speaks, even if he is listening to ever word. ]

[ at the end of it, slides down to his rear. after changing his posture so that he can lean his back against the tree, he gives her a small smile with no small amount of effort. ]

It's okay. I can always charge interest.

[ pouts but bumps his shoulder with her own. ]

Meanie.

[ leans on him a little, eyes going back to the sky. lips go up into a smile again, her voice soft and gentle. ]

It's such a beautiful day today. For some reason it feels like I haven't seen it in a long time. Like... I've been stuck in a dream, you know? Something foggy and dark.

[ presses her forehead to his shoulder, eyes closing contently. ]

I missed you. I'm glad you're here with me.

[ wills himself not to flinch at the contact as he hesitantly leans his own head down, cheek just barely brushing down against the top of her head. ]

[ then cranes his face upward toward the sky, a million thoughts running through in mind. swallows thickly, but speaks with only the smallest waver in his tone, deciding not to question her just yet. ]

Yeah. I. . . I missed you too. Welcome back.

[ lips form into a pout again, turning her head on his shoulder to look up at him. ]

Aw, I was almost afraid that you didn't miss me. I got no hug or anything~
