[ it's after his meet-up with his supervisor that he gets a call from robin to babysit alice. of course he says 'yes' -- he has nothing planned for the day & would never consciously turn down time with his niece. & like he told robin before, more free air should do him some good; who knows, if he's feeling better in mind, the body might follow. (he didn't really believe that since the damage from the accident has been said to be absolute, but a little bit of feigned hope wasn't too heavy to carry around.)

that's the context to their current scenario: at the park with alice, doing whatever she wants until it's time for lunch & ice cream. time with uncle nick is the time to get spoiled, so he doesn't worry too much about feeding her nutritional things; he's pretty sure his ~~mom~~ sis has that covered anyway. ]

[ blinks, looking thoughtful. ]

I think she was smaller when she was a kitten...

I meant during adulthood.

Of course! She has always appreciated good food.

Or too much food. [ which seems to be a pattern in the family. only, they don't become as round as that cat. ]

[ unhooks an arm from around nick to wave him off a little. ]

It's fine, it's fine. Danielle said she's perfectly healthy!

Huh. Guess I shouldn't argue with Snow White. [ finally lifts a hand to give lyssa's own a pat. ] Going to let me up anytime soon?

But I'm so comfortable...

[ lets go anyway, scooting back over to the food he has yet to start on. ]

[ gets to his feet & starts exercising his fingers while glancing over at the food. ]

. . . You want any help?

That would be wonderful. [ points over at the squash, zucchini, and onion over to the right of him. ] Would you like to chop those up for me? Rounds are fine, it doesn't have to have any particular shape.

[ nods & meanders on over, setting up the chopping block before reaching for the knife & said vegetables. ]

So does this dish have a name, or are we going with 'chicken'?

Baked chicken and herbs! [ gestures with a hand at what nick's doing. ] But that's just a side dish, even if I think you'll like it. My pie-making skills are superb as well, so your taste buds should brace themselves for impact.

[ nods along, going a little slow with the chopping out of caution for his fingers. ]

Nah. They like being surprised.

[ salutes him briefly. ]

Whatever you say, sir!

[ quirks a smile, but doesn't look up, focusing on the task at hand. once everything is chopped up in (slightly) mismatched sizes, he glances over at lyssa. ]

Anything else, chef?

[ points at the pack of bread rolls sitting on the counter, taking the cut up vegetables and dumping them into a saucepan. ]

Place those on a cooking sheet? We'll pop it in the oven about 20 minutes before the chicken is done.

[ does as he's instructed, lining up the bread rolls as he's once seen robin do it once. eventually though, he runs out of space, so he simply begins to squish them close together. leans away from it when he's done, not wanting to disturb the bread rolls anymore.

steps closer so that he can reach the sink, washing his hands slowly. ]

Next time, we'll just make sandwiches.

With the chicken you'll have left over from tonight, probably.

[ but then he's quiet, moving about to finish up the rest of the prep work. when everything is in place and he's got the food where it's supposed to be, he reaches out to tug at nick's hand gently towards the living room. ] Come on, I have a surprise for you!

[ comes along obediently, but throws a glance over his shoulder anyway. ]

What, buying me enough food for a month wasn't enough?

Nope! [ leads him to the couch, placing his hands on his shoulders to make him sit down. turns to one of the bags he had left behind, pulling out what looks like a miniature tree (http://i51.tinypic.com/144a0cl.jpg). comes back on over, sitting close to nick while holding it out. ] Ta-da!

[ stares. takes the tree. stares down at it a little bit longer. then blinking out of his (second round of) stupor, he reaches up to brush the back of a hand against the leaves.

looks at lyssa, trying to hide his amusement with his usual deadpan: ]

You got me a fake tree.

[ nods, deciding to just lean against him while lifting a finger to nudge at one of the decorations on it. ]

I was going to just get you a real tree, but it probably wouldn't have been able to fit in the apartment. And since you don't seem like you're going to be decorating, I decided this is the second best thing for you to have!

[ shifts a bit so that they're both comfortable, turning the tree around a little to look at all the little decorations. ]

It's a good place to start, I guess. [ braces the pot of the tree against a thigh. ] Thanks.

[ lightly nudges nick's jawline with the top of his head. ]

Can I get something nice in return?

[ shifts his head away so that he can glance down at him. uses his free hand to give lyssa a gentle flick to the forehead. ]

How about you wait 'til Christmas and find out?

[ makes a face at that, pouting while rubbing the spot a little. ]

Because I'm here right now...
